A global voice for women speaks
JIM DE BOOM
Soroptimist International Newport Harbor will host a noon luncheon on
Thursday at the Embassy Suites Hotel, 2120 Main St. in Irvine, that
features as the speaker Zainab Salbi, president and founder of Women
for Women International, a group that provides women survivors of war
and civil strife the tools and resources to move from crisis and
poverty to self-sufficiency and active citizenship.
“The Salbi organization has worked in Croatia, Bosnia, Rwanda,
Kosovo, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Colombia and
is internationally known for her work with Women Survivors of War,”
said Dawn Marie Lemonds, chair of the Soroptimist International
quadrennial project.
Salbi and Soroptimist International have partnered to form Project
Independence: Women Survivors of War, Lemonds said.
Tickets for the luncheon to hear this outstanding speaker are
available at $25 per person by calling (714) 957-5046.
POSTER CONTEST WINNER
The Harbor Mesa Lions participated in the Lions International
Peace Poster Contest this year with entries from the Westside Boys &
Girls Club.
Twelve children entered their version of “Create A Brighter
Tomorrow” posters; the winning entry came from Cindy Calderon. Her
poster depicted the world with children’s hands reaching out to each
other.
President Joan Parks presented Cindy a $50 cash award, and all
children received a certificate of appreciation from Lions’
International.
This contest is held every year for middle-school-age children
around the world. Local winners’ posters are sent to compete with
various levels until 24 finalist posters are selected, with one
deemed the winner.
The grand prize winner receives a trip to New York City with with
a parent and the Lions’ Club president. Included in the trip are
tours of the city and the designation of special guest at the Lions
Day with the United Nations. The grand prize winner also receives
$2,500. The other 23 finalists receive $500.
It is estimated that more than 135,000 students will participate
this year from throughout the world.

INTERFAITH IN CHINA
As you read today’s Daily Pilot, 34 people are on an eight-day
Interfaith Council trip to China, I being one of them.
We have a diverse group of clergy and lay members: Lutherans,
Presbyterians, Jews, Episcopalians, Disciples of Christ, Baptists,
Catholics, Methodists and Unitarians. We are visiting the traditional
tourist sites and a Catholic church, a Protestant church, a Jewish
synagogue and a number of Buddhist temples.
And on Sunday, while I am in China, my wife, Barbara, will
celebrate her 60th birthday with daughters Stacy and Jodi by taking a
trip to wine country in Napa.
WORTH REPEATING
From Thought for the Day provided by Greg Kelley of the Newport
Mesa Irvine Interfaith Council:
“A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will
annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.”
