Holland is a singular sensation

Corona del Mar High senior Brittany Holland, who had shared in

Pacific Coast League doubles titles the last three years and teamed

with Taylynn Snyder to win the CIF Southern Section doubles title

last fall, won the PCL singles crown Monday at Racquet Club of

Irvine.

Holland defeated Laguna Beach’s Claire Reach, 6-2, 6-2, in the

rubber match between the two this season.

“The first time we played, I lost and the second time, I beat

her,” Holland said. “She’s a great player and all the games today

were very close. I just think I came out stronger. I was really

focused and I told myself I needed to get off to a good start. I

think all aspects of my game were on today, including my serve and my

ground strokes. I was happy with my level of play.”

Holland defeated Catherine Yoo from Northwood, 6-3, 6-3, in

Monday’s semifinals.

Holland teamed with Snyder, a 2003 graduate, to win the PCL

doubles crown in 2002 and 2001. She did the same in 2000 alongside

partner Leslie Damion, now a sophomore at UC Santa Barbara.

“Doubles was really fun, but I decided I might as well go for it

and play singles this year,” Holland said. “With CIF coming up [team

playoffs begin Thursday and the individual championships are set to

open Nov. 22], this was a really good way to prepare for it.”

Two CdM doubles teams, including the top-seeded tandem of senior

Juliette Mutzke and freshman Jilliann Braverman, were defeated in the

semifinals Monday.

Mutzke-Braverman lost to a team from Laguna Beach, 6-3, 6-4.

Third-seeded Miranda and Hayley Young, both CdM freshmen, were

defeated by a Laguna Beach duo, 6-1, 6-1, in the other semifinal.
