Veteran attacked during holiday

A 77-year-old Huntington Beach resident is in critical condition

after being attacked and robbed at a Union Bank parking lot at 4:30

a.m. Tuesday.

Cecil L. Warren, a maintenance worker for 25 years at the bank on

Beach Boulevard, was unconscious in the parking lot for about 30

minutes with severe head trauma before being discovered by a

passerby, Lt. Janet Perez said. The assailants reportedly stole

Warren’s wallet, which contained cash and credit cards.

Warren, a World War II veteran, was only able to describe his

attackers as two males with dark complexions. He was taken to Hoag

Hospital in Newport Beach after being treated at the scene by

paramedics.

The Huntington Beach Police Department asks anyone who was in the

area early Tuesday and has information about the incident to call

(714) 375-5066.

Suspect arrested in man’s murder

Police arrested a Huntington Beach resident on suspicion of

beating and stabbing to death the boyfriend of his estranged wife in

an apartment on Portview Circle last week.

Officers found 19-year-old Sergio Ojeda dead on the back-bedroom

floor of the apartment in the 20300 block after responding to two 911

calls at 7:19 and 7:22 a.m. Nov. 6.

John Salcida, 22, was found in the bathroom along with his

estranged wife. Salcida’s face and neck were covered with blood as a

result of what were apparently self-inflicted wounds, Capt. Dan

Johnson said. The woman, whose name wasn’t released because of a

domestic violence incident with Salcida two weeks earlier, was

extremely distraught but had suffered no injuries, Johnson said.

Salcida was first taken to UCI Medical Center and then transferred

to the county hospital jail ward at Western Medical Center. He was

released from the hospital and taken to Orange County Jail with no

bail after recovering from his injuries on Monday. Police booked

Salcida on suspicion of murder and kidnapping.

Police heard only a hysterical woman during the first call before

the line cut out. They received another call a few minutes later from

a man who said he’d just killed his wife’s boyfriend, Johnson said.

Police recognized the address from the incident two weeks earlier,

when they had arrested Salcida on suspicion of domestic violence. He

was out on bail with a trial pending.

Salcida had apparently hit himself on the head and face with a

hard object and had slashed his own throat by the time police

forcibly entered the apartment, Johnson said.
