Second-seeded Newport Harbor sweeps to Saturday’s quarterfinals

Newport Harbor High junior Kiley Hall had eight kills and senior

teammate Alyson Jennings added seven kills and two aces to help the

Sailors sweep visiting Katella, 25-7, 25-9, 25-12, in the second

round of the CIF Southern Section Division II-AA girls volleyball

playoffs Thursday.

No. 2-seeded Newport Harbor (23-5) plays either El Dorado or

Sultana in Saturday’s quarterfinals.

Taryn Tarnutzer added five kills for the winners, who also had two

kills from Coco Yokoyama and Holland Osadche.

CdM blows by Beaumont

* The No. 2-seeded Corona del Mar High girls volleyball team

blitzed visiting Beaumont, 25-12, 25-10, 25-13, in the first round of

the CIF Southern Section Division III-A playoffs Thursday.

Senior Ashley Bill led the way with 24 assists and five service

aces, while junior Jordan Smith added 10 kills and junior Breanne

Ogden had seven digs.

The Sea Kings (19-8) play either Santa Ynez or Bishop Amat in

Saturday’s quarterfinals.

Sage ousted by Maranatha

* The Sage Hill School girls volleyball team ended its season,

losing to visiting Maranatha, 25-23, 25-19, 25-20, in the second

round of the CIF Southern Section Division IV-A playoffs Thursday.

Sophomores Cat Dailey and Sophia Hillgren recorded six kills each,

while Haywood Wright had four stuff blocks for Sage Hill (9-8).

“We played really tough,” Sage Hill Coach Ingrid Gustavson said.

“They won, but we still feel really good about our team. I’m really

excited with how far we went and I’m really excited for next year

with a lot of our players returning.”

Mustangs swept away

* Costa Mesa High, which traveled to Sherman Oaks Thursday, was

swept by Notre Dame in the first round of the CIF Southern Section

Division III-A girls volleyball playoffs.

The Mustangs lost, 25-9, 25-19, 25-6. Notre Dame improved to 17-6.

Costa Mesa, third in the Golden West League, ended its season at 8-7.
