Traffic stop leads to drug arrest

A routine traffic stop in Laguna Beach on Nov. 7 led police to a

hotel room in Costa Mesa that had 26 pounds of high-grade marijuana,

valued at about $120,000, and $2,000 inside.

Laguna Beach officers stopped 28-year-old Robert Schutt, a

self-employed glassblower from Michigan, for a traffic violation

Downtown at 1:58 a.m. and smelled marijuana in his 1998 Toyota truck.

Police found $13,000 in the vehicle and a small amount of marijuana.

Schutt told police where he was staying, but he wasn’t fully

cooperative during the investigation, Sgt. Darin Lenyi said.

Schutt was arrested on suspicion of possessing marijuana for sale

and is being held at Orange County Jail on $10,000 bail.

Teen reports threat of rape

Police are investigating a report by a 13-year-old resident Monday

that via Instant Messenger one of her classmates had threatened to

rape her.

The victim said the 13-year-old suspect had referred to having sex

with her on several occasions on-line, and said she’d repeatedly

asked him to leave her alone. He had also followed her around over

the summer and stood outside her window staring at her, she said, and

took the case to the police after he mentioned rape, Sgt. Darin Lenyi

said.

The case was referred to a detective in charge of juveniles to be

investigated, but no charges are likely to be filed, Lenyi said.

“When the suspect’s as young as 13, it’s almost always resolved

with counseling unless he was caught carrying out his threat,” Lenyi

said. “We just got this case, though, so it’s early in the

investigation and we don’t know enough to predict where it’s going.”
