Former Corona del Mar High water polo coach and former UC Irvine

standout John Vargas returned to his old stomping grounds Saturday

and left with a victory.

Stanford, ranked No. 2 and coached by Vargas, defeated UCI, 12-6,

as Peter Varellas, Tony Azevedo and Thomas Hopkins scored three goals

each for the Cardinal in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action at

the Anteater Aquatics Complex.

The Cardinal improved to 17-3, 6-1 in the MPSF. Two-meter man Dan

Noon led UCI with three goals while Phil Garcia scored twice on power

plays.

UCI goalie Joe Wynne recorded eight saves as the No. 7 Anteaters

fell to 12-14, 3-5 in conference action.

UCI’s nonconference home game against UC Santa Barbara Nov. 22 has

been canceled. The Anteaters will next compete in the MPSF tournament

Nov. 28-30 at Belmont Plaza.

UCSB rallies past UCI

* VOLLEYBALL: UC Santa Barbara clinched at least a tie for the Big

West Conference women’s volleyball title Saturday night as the host

Gauchos rallied to defeat UC Irvine in four, 28-30, 30-22, 30-26,

30-16 at the Thunderdome in Goleta.

Kelly Wing (17 kills), Dana Kurzbard (13) and Terbrie Taylor (11)

led the Anteaters (19-9, 10-6 in the Big West), while Janine Sandell

paced UC Santa Barbara (18-7, 14-3).

‘Eaters fall in overtime

* SOCCER: Gene Deering scored in the second overtime Saturday

night to lift UC Santa Barbara over host UC Irvine, 1-0, in Big West Conference men’s soccer action.

UCSB improved to 15-4-1, 7-3-0 in the Big West, while UCI fell to

6-11-3, 3-4-3. UCI goalie Cameron Rossi had four saves.

Kim sparks VU men

* BASKETBALL: Sophomore Brian Kim scored a game-high 23 points to

lead the Vanguard University men’s basketball team to a 68-60

nonconference victory over visiting Cal State Los Angeles Saturday.

Kim shot 6 of 12 from the field in the Lions’ homecoming game,

while Horace Wormley added 14 points, Brett McGee scored 13 and Kevin

Dalafu 10. Tim Burnette, Leon Rosborough and Kim grabbed seven

rebounds each, as Vanguard (3-1) outrebounded Cal State L.A., 42-32.

David Conte, a Costa Mesa High product, scored seven points for

Cal State L.A.
