Special Ed advisory meeting tonight

The Special Education Community Advisory Committee for the school

district will host a community resource presentation and parent

meeting tonight.

The meeting will introduce parents and professionals to community

resources that can support and enhance the education of special needs

children.

Representatives from organizations like Special Olympics and the

Learning Disabilities Assn. of Orange County will be there.

Spanish translation and child care will be available to

participants.

The committee is a group of parents, educations and members of the

community who are concerned with special education issues and

programs in the Newport-Mesa Unified School District. The committee

serves in an advisory capacity to help develop home-school

partnerships, parent education programs and recommendations to the

school board on special education issues.

The meeting will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. in the board room of the

Newport-Mesa Education Center at 2985 Bear St. For more information,

Newport Explorers nab 6 trophies in county meet

The Newport Beach Police Explorers Post 1050, a group of 14- to

21-year-olds who train in law enforcement and perform community

service, brought back six trophies from the Explorer Competition of

the Orange County Law Enforcement Explorers last weekend.

The Newport Explorers Post won first place for handling of

domestic violence, hostage negotiations and crime scene

investigations. The team also won the second-place trophy in the

domestic violence-handling category a second-place trophy for

handling DUI situations and third place for male physical agility.

Members of the Newport Beach team who competed are: Nouhad Captan,

Kyle Werner, Tri-Vein Nguyen, Charles Albright, Ann Shindler, Kim

Shelton, Sara Bottum, Sergio Luna, Brian Budrow, Ashleigh

Williams-Pearce, Jim Speicher and David Medina. Newport’s was one of

43 Explorer Posts to participate in the competition, which took place

Saturday and Sunday at the Sheriff’s Tactical Training Center in

Anaheim and included 11 events.

Public invited to nature center walk

The public is invited to visit Newport Beach’s Environmental

Nature Center at noon Thursday for a walk through the center with its

founder, Robert House.

Created in 1972 on unused land next to Newport Harbor High School,

the center now is a garden featuring 14 of California’s 28 plant

communities including a desert and redwood forest.
