Seahawks soar into championship game

The Newport-Mesa Jr. Midget Seahawks continued the Jr. All-American

Football playoffs with a 38-0 victory over the Mona Park Pathfinders

to continue their undefeated season.

Robbie Boyer returned a Pathfinder punt 25 yards to set up the

Seahawks’ first offensive drive. Quarterback Matt Barkley found Jacob

Gildart for a 40-yard touchdown. Gildart later added a 55-yard

rushing TD with blocking from Matt Garza, Erik Rask, Boyer, Justin

Elbourn, Corbin McNutt, Kevin Morgenstern, Frankie Russo, Max

Stiegler and Steven Deverian.

Barkley connected with halfback Carlos Valdes for a 45-yard

touchdown to open the second quarter. Garza added another touchdown

run.

Brett Hanrahan then blocked a Pathfinder punt and ran 35 yards for

another Seahawk touchdown.

Hanrahan, Elbourn, McNutt, Alex Vollaire, Stiegler and Morgenstern

led the defensive line.

Hunter Alder, Taylor McSunas, Morgan Brombal, Scottie Chene, Tyler

Harmon, John Heard, Ryan Lawler, Patrick Marin-Finn, James McKennon,

Travis Pricket, Austin Raiger, Kevin Rask and Richard Townsend

provided solid play on both offense and defense.

The Seahawks face Norwalk in the AFL-NFL championship game

Saturday. If they defeat Norwalk, the Seahawks would play in the

Super Bowl the following weekend.

In first-round playoff action:

Garza blew the game open with touchdown runs of 30, 25 and 5 yards

in the first half. He then added a 50-yard touchdown catch in the

third quarter on a pass from Barkley.

Hanrahan blocked a punt in the first quarter and Boyer raced 70

yards to paydirt on a punt return. Gildart scored on a 45-yard run

and added several solo tackles.

McNutt sacked the quarterback several times while Chene and

linebackers Eric Rask and Marin-Finn made key stops. Safety Heard

came up to make some stops.

Barkley went 3 for 3 with two completions to Garza and one to

Valdes. Barkley was also 6 for 6 on his PATs. Alder booted the final

extra-point try for the Seahawks.
