Sowers “perfect” in run to league titles

It was a double-dip victory for the Sowers Middle School girls’

basketball program, which captured regular season championships by

defeating Ensign of Newport Beach.

In the eighth-grade girls’ regular season finale, a showdown

between two teams vying for the first-place spot, Sowers erased an

eight-point deficit to pull out a 26-25 win at Ensign.

In the seventh-grade game between the rivals, Sowers emerged a

24-16 victory.

The two wins allowed both teams to finish the league regular

season with 6-0 records and earn the No. 1 seed in the league’s

postseason tournament.

Sowers 26, Ensign 25

In a frantic finish to a well-played game, Melissa Boyer’s rebound

basket in the closing seconds lifted Sowers to the eighth-grade

regular season title.

The Lady Vikings had trailed, 25-24, with 20 seconds to play when

Kelsey Hwang came up with a steal of an Ensign inbounds play.

With an Ensign player on her, Hwang had her shot go in and out of

the basket, but teammate Bree Williston was there for the rebound.

Williston missed her follow shot but Boyer was there for the rebound

and put in the game-winner.

Williston led both teams in scoring and rebounds with 10 points

and 11 caroms.

Boyer finished with eight points, Hwang had six points and Leslie

DeJesus scored two points and had four assists.

The postseason tournament begins today at Ensign, where No. 1 seed

Sowers will take on TeWinkle of Costa Mesa.

Sowers 24, Ensign 16

The Lady Vikings took control of the seventh-grade showdown and

went on to defeat the host team.

Sowers’ offense was paced by the scoring of Kelly Peterson and

Mary Madden who scored 11 and nine points, respectively.

Janene Chavez and Michelle Yamasaki led the Sowers defense.
