Sowers nabs two postseason victories
The Sowers Middle School girls’ basketball teams each ran their
record to 7-0 with a pair of first-round playoff victories over Costa
Mesa.
By routing the Mustangs, 42-12, the seventh-grade Lady Vikings
will face cross-town rival Dwyer (6-1) in the division championship
game.
Dwyer downed Ensign in the other seventh-grade semifinal game.
Sowers’ eighth-grade squad also was impressive in whipping Costa
Mesa, 42-19.
That win puts the Lady Vikings into the division final against
Ensign (6-1), which advanced to the championship final by virtue of a
28-24 win over Dwyer (5-2) in the other semifinal game.

Kelly Peterson set a playoff scoring record for Sowers’
seventh-grade team by scoring 16 points in just three quarters of
play.
“If there’s a better seventh-grade basketball player in our
league, I haven’t seen her,” Sowers coach Ken DeMarco said. “She’s a
real prodigy.”
Peterson, a co-MVP on Sowers’ seventh-grade championship team a
year ago, averaged eight points a game during the regular season
despite being limited to only two quarters of play.
Michelle Yamasaki, a second year starter for the Lady Vikings,
darted through the Lady Mustang defense throughout the contest and
hit six of seven shots.
She put her 12 points up against five steals and three assists.
Mary Madden continued her strong play in the lane by matching
eight points with eight rebounds.

Dalia Webb’s 14 points paced a balanced Lady Vikings attack.
Briana Fields came off the bench and had a big game in the paint
with four points, six rebounds, three steals and three blocked shots.
Captain Bree Williston scored six points with five rebounds before
exiting with an ankle sprain in the third quarter.
Leslie DeJesus added six points, five rebounds and three assists
before joining Williston on the bench with a strained abdomen muscle.
Both Williston and DeJesus, members of Sowers’ seventh-grade
championship team in 2002, are expected to play in the division final
against Ensign.
