Breakers come back after semifinal loss

Two days after being eliminated from title contention in CIF Southern

Section Division I play, Laguna Beach High’s girls’ tennis team made

its presence known at the CIF-SS Girls Individual Tennis Singles

Championships and Doubles Championships.

Senior Lindsey Nelson and sophomore Claire Rietsch advanced out of

regional play at Costa Mesa Tennis Center to earn a spot in the Dec.

3 Sweet Sixteen tournament at SeaCliff Country Club in Huntington

Beach.

In doubles action, two Laguna teams, Katie Ochwat and Lorren

Butterwick, and Jackie Reed and Kellie Ammerman, also advanced to the

quarterfinal round.

As a team, Laguna’s bid to win the CIF-SS Division I championship

was denied for a second consecutive year by Beverly Hills.

The Normans came to Laguna and escaped with a 10-8 semifinal

victory.

The loss ended an outstanding season for Laguna at 20-2.
