Two arrested after robbery with belt, fork

Costa Mesa police arrested two men early Friday morning on

suspicion of trying to rob a man using a belt and a fork, Sgt. Bob

Ciszek said.

Daniel Romero-Geronimo, 21, and Eloy Romero-Geronimo, 22,

reportedly accosted the victim in the 500 block of Joann Street at

about 12:55 a.m. and tried to take money from him, he said.

“But the man fought them off, and these two men fled,” Ciszek

said.

Police officers arrested both near the intersection of Harbor

Boulevard and Wilson Street at about 1:30 a.m., he said.

The victim suffered cuts to his head, Ciszek said.

Both men are being held in Costa Mesa city jail in lieu of $50,000

bail each. They have been charged with assault with a deadly weapon.

Fire causes $25,000 damage, no injuries

No one was hurt in a fire that broke out in a townhome on the east

side of Costa Mesa on Friday evening, officials said.

The fire, which originated in the fireplace of the home in the

2300 block of Elden Avenue caused about $25,000 in damages, Costa

Mesa Fire Capt. Keith Jones said.

“The fire got into the drywall and the wood framing of the

fireplace,” he said.

The blaze was confined to the fireplace, and firefighters managed

to extinguish it within 20 minutes, Jones said. The call came in at

about 6:10 p.m., he said.

One person was in the home at the time, Jones said.

“We were also able to rescue a bird, a snake and a lizard from the

home,” he added with a smile.
