lecture Thursday night about parenting issues at Harbor Day School in

Corona del Mar.

Sears will speak about “The Successful Child: 10 Tips for

IQ Through Nutrition.”

A graduate of Harvard Medical School, Sears serves as associate

and has practiced pediatrics for more than 30 years. Two of his sons

are in his practice, and two more are finishing their pediatrics

residencies and will join him soon.

He and his wife, Martha, live in Capistrano Beach.

Other books published by Sears include “The Attachment Parenting

Handbook,” “The Discipline Book” and “The Successful Child.” He has

appeared on “Oprah” and “Good Morning America.”

The lecture will run from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Harbor Day

School, 3443 Pacific View Drive in Corona del Mar. A few seats are

South Coast Plaza presents check

Sales taxes from South Coast Plaza stores generated nearly $11

million for the city of Costa Mesa between July 2002 and June 2003,

Costa Mesa Chamber of Commerce President Ed Fawcett said.

He and Werner Escher, a top South Coast Plaza executive, presented

the city with a giant check on Monday representing that revenue.

Though the revenue has already been collected by the city, the

check presentation is a marketing move in anticipation of the state’s

putting further financial strain on local governments, which might

look to businesses to make up funding gaps, Fawcett said.

“What we want to do is show them, reinforce to them what the plaza

means to the city,” Fawcett said. “If you want to encourage more

golden eggs, don’t strangle the goose.”

Costa Mesa Finance Director Mark Puckett said the sales tax is the

city’s largest single source of revenue and it has been important to

the city budget. He noted that city sales tax collections have been

flat for the past three years because of the economic slump.

“Hopefully, this year, we’ll see some growth in that,” he said.
