Season ends for Edison

Edison High had its 2003 football season come to an end Friday in a

21-0 loss to top-ranked Long Beach Poly in a CIF-Southern Section

Division quarterfinal game at Orange Coast College.

The Chargers offense couldn’t find its groove against a Poly

defense that limited Edison to just 165 yards and forced five

fumbles, recovering one.

The Chargers, who had a five-game win streak snapped, had reached

the quarterfinal round following a 31-14 first-round win Nov. 28 at

A.B. Miller in Fontana.

Edison fielded a young and inexperienced team in 2003, but the

Chargers combined senior leadership with a stingy defense to go 8-4

overall and in the process, tie for the Sunset League championship.

Three of their four losses are to Poly, Mater Dei and Los Alamitos

-- three of the four teams playing in Friday’s Division I semifinals.

They lost by a touchdown to Mater Dei and Los Alamitos in games

that went down to the wire.

“It was a great year and this team did a lot of great things,”

Coach Dave White said. “To become a league champion, when we were

picked at the beginning of the season to finish fourth in league,

says a lot of the effort by these kids.

“We beat Fountain Valley and won a playoff game, too. I’m very

proud of this team. They definitely had a great year.”
