Lack of subs can’t stop Sage Hill

The Sage Hill School boys soccer team played with no substitutes for

the majority of the game, and twice had to compete with 10 players,

yet still won its season-opener, 3-0, over nonleague host Calvary

Chapel of Downey Thursday.

The Lightning have 16 players on its varsity team, but because of

injuries and illness, Sage Hill was down to 12 players entering

Thursday’s game. Freshman Jonathan Gordon suffered an injury early

on, and twice Sage Hill was assessed a yellow card and played a man

down.

Sophomore Zack Milder, freshman Tyler Ellis and sophomore Chris

Neale scored goals, while assists came from Neale, senior Jordan

Salinger and freshman Conrad Whitaker. Senior goalie Cesar Arriaga

defended well, as did freshman Alex Edelstein, Sage Hill assistant

coach Doug West said.

Mustangs win again

* SOCCER: Costa Mesa defeated University, 3-1, in a nonleague

girls victory Thursday at Costa Mesa.

Costa Mesa and Uni played in the Pacific Coast League in 2001-02,

but the Mustangs moved to the Golden West League last year. Freshman

Cindy Mendoza scored an unassisted goal less than two minutes in for

Mesa (2-0), but the Trojans (0-2) answered right back two minutes

later. About two minutes after Uni’s goal, senior Vera Gale sent a

shot in the net from Julie Nomura’s corner kick to give the Mustangs

a 2-1 lead. In the 70th minute, junior Jenny Sparks put in the

insurance goal on an assist from sophomore Jasmin Day. Junior

goalkeeper Kindra Bailey had five saves for Mesa.

Abdul scores in debut

* SOCCER: Freshman Nazmy Abdul, playing in her first varsity game,

scored in the 50th minute to lead the Estancia girls team to a 1-0

nonleague victory over visiting Bolsa Grande Thursday.

Junior Elise Carroll assisted for Abdul, who began the season on

the junior varsity team. Junior goalkeeper Marcie Kirchberg recorded

one save for the Eagles (1-1), who outshot the Matadors, 16-2.

CdM ties Dana Hills

* SOCCER: A strong second-half surge highlighted by sophomore

Kelly Morgan’s goal gave the visiting Corona del Mar girls a 1-1

nonleague tie against Dana Hills Thursday.

Morgan went around the Dana Hills goalkeeper, who had deflected a

prior shot, and sneaked the ball into the net for the tying goal in

the 44th minute. Dana Hills’ Candice Baker scored almost the same way

in the 23rd minute when she kicked the ball out of CdM goalkeeper

Katie Schiesser’s hands. Schiesser made four saves.

Defender Hannah Rollins filled in valiantly for Courtney Carnahan,

who left the game with a sprained ankle, CdM Coach Bryan Middleton

said.

Estancia solid in opener

* WRESTLING: The Estancia High wrestling team went 2-1 in a

four-way meet at Savanna on Wednesday, when the Eagles opened their

season on a high note.

Estancia defeated Orange, 48-22, and University, 43-22, but lost

to host Savanna. Estancia and Savanna tied, 38-38, but the Rebels won

because they recorded more pins.

Against University, Ulysses Cardena (119-pound division), Alfonso

Pedroza (125) and Patrick Conlan (130) won by pin for the Eagles,

while Danny Alderete (112), Martin Diaz (135), Gabriel Thaler (145),

Adam Rodriguez (152), Matt Zich (160) and Landon Pulizzi (215) also

recorded victories.

OCC tops Napa Valley

* BASKETBALL: The Orange Coast College women’s basketball team

scored 44 second-half points to pull away and defeat Napa Valley,

65-51, in the first round of the Cuesta tournament Thursday.

Sophomore Alisa Carrillo led the Pirates (4-4) with 15 points,

while freshman Rhondi Naff and sophomore Amy Shaw added 11 points

each. Shaw hit three three-pointers. Coast trailed, 23-21, at

halftime.

OCC will face Centralia of Washington today at 6 p.m. in the

tourney’s semifinals. The final will be Saturday.
