Sailors surge in second half
Newport Harbor High’s girls basketball team erased a 10-point
halftime deficit and earned a 52-45 victory against Estancia in the
first round of the University tournament at University High Saturday.
Newport Harbor (2-0) went on a 14-0 run to begin the third quarter
and took advantage of the thin Eagles, who had just six players.
Lindsey Miller scored a team-high 17 points followed by 14 from
Kristi Eddington and 10 from Allyson Stoltz.
Junior guard Imelda Pena led all scorers with 18 points followed
by 17 from Nancy Castro. Castro and Pena combined for 25 of
Estancia’s 29 first-half points.
“We held them to 12 in the second half,” Newport Coach Jen
Thompson said. “We don’t have a lot of height this year, but in two
games we have done a tremendous job of boxing out.”
Newport grabbed 40 rebounds a day after tallying 35 against CdM.
Whitfield had nine boards while Miller (seven), Victoria Swigart
(six), Eddington (five), April Slater (five) and Stoltz (five) also
contributed on the glass.
