Sailors win season opener

The Newport Harbor High girls water polo team opened its season with

a 16-3 nonleague victory over host Esperanza Tuesday.

Anne Belden led the Sailors with five goals while Jessica Ball

added four and Leah Robertson scored three. Kaycie Craib contributed

two goals and Melissa Wheeler and Carolyn Conway had one each. Goalie

Kim Housepian recorded five saves.

The game was originally scheduled to be played at Newport, but a

decision was made last week to compete at Esperanza because the

Sailors’ renovated pool was not expected to be ready for use. But the

pool is ready. The Sailors trained in it Saturday.

CdM blanks Seahawks

* SOCCER: Corona del Mar High’s girls soccer team allowed just one

shot and capitalized offensively for a 3-0 nonleague victory over

host Ocean View Tuesday.

Jessica Mazura, Kelly Morgan and Tanisha Senaratne all found the

back of the net after each shot from a similar spot near the top of

the 18-yard box. Taylor Fallon assisted on Morgan’s goal, which made

it, 2-0, in the 27th minute.

Morgan then drew the foul that led to Senaratne’s goal to cap the

scoring.

Vanessa Fallon and Amanda Stockstill keyed the defense, CdM Coach

Bryan Middleton said, in front of goalkeeper Katie Schiesser, who

made one save.

CdM (1-1-1) begins the Mater Dei invitational with a 2 p.m. game

against Aliso Niguel Thursday at Centennial Park in Santa Ana. The

Sea Kings will face Martin Luther King Jr. at 3:30 p.m. Friday and

Capistrano Valley at 10:30 a.m. Saturday to wrap up pool play.

Chargers jolt Sailors

* SOCCER: Two second-half goals catapulted the host El Toro High

girls soccer team to a 3-0 nonleague victory over Newport Harbor

Tuesday.

The Chargers led, 1-0, at halftime but received subsequent goals

from Katie McMannus and Katie Carney in the final 40 minutes to

finish the scoring.

Newport goalkeeper Kara DeMille made 15 saves while

TaylerGiacomaro and Stephanie Lambrakis were kept busy on defense.

Reese Simmons contributed at midfield while Jenny Taylor and Krystal

Wright led the front line.

Newport (0-3) faces Dana Hills at 2 p.m. Thursday to begin pool

play in the Mater Dei invitational at Centennial Park in Santa Ana.

The Sailors then play Long Beach Wilson at 3:30 p.m. Friday and

Northwood at noon Saturday.

Steenhard wins it

* WATER POLO: The Costa Mesa High girls water polo team overcame a

four-goal, fourth-quarter deficit to defeat nonleague visitor El

Modena, 9-8, Tuesday.

Senior Jessica Steenhard scored her third goal with 1:49 left to

give the Mustangs (4-2) their first lead of the game. Costa Mesa was

down, 8-4, after three quarters, but outscored the Vanguards, 5-0, in

the final quarter. Chanda Malapira scored two goals for Mesa, while

Sarah Bowman, Allyson Harris, Annie Le and Christine Twohig added one

each. Senior goalie Quyen Nguyen had nine saves for the Mustangs.

Tars meet their match

* SURFING: The Newport Harbor High surf team met its match and

then some Tuesday, when the Sailors lost to San Clemente, the

defending state champion.

San Clemente won all four events over the Sailors, the Sea View

League champions, who fell to 8-2. Newport’s Erica Hosseini grabbed

first place in girls short board and third in one of the boys short

board heats. Tanner Prairie finished second in boys long board, while

Daniel Matthew came in third in the body board competition.

Jill Austin and Lisa Turk finished third and fifth, respectively,

in girls long board. Joey Head, Steve Farmer and Charlie Buckingham

were fourth in their respective boys short board heats.

Two Bucs on first team

* SOCCER: Allison Apodaca and Blaire Nakano were first-team

All-Orange Empire Conference selections for Orange Coast College this

season.

The all-conference team, announced Sunday at the conclusion of the

state tournament, was led by most valuable player Cynthia Pinkney

from Cypress and coach of the year Pam Lewin from Fullerton.

Apodaca, a freshman from Edison High, and Nakano, a freshman from

Fountain Valley High, were the lone Orange Coast representatives on

the 19-player first team.

Pirates freshman defender Katie Santora was selected to the second

team, as was freshman forward Jenny Chavis.

Also on the second team were Katie Roche, a sophomore at Cypress

from Costa Mesa High, and Lauren Loe, a freshman at Santiago Canyon

from Corona del Mar High.

Weiner on champion

* WATER POLO: Newport Harbor High product Robert Weiner, a junior

at USC, was a part of the Trojans’ NCAA championship team this

season.

USC defeated Stanford, guided by former Corona del Mar High head

man John Vargas, 9-7, in overtime in the title game Sunday at

Stanford’s Avery Aquatics Center.

Weiner, a reserve at two meters, scored three goals for the 24-3

Trojans this season.

Tars drop first game

* BASKETBALL: Victoria Swigart scored 11 points, including three

three-pointers, but the Newport Harbor High girls basketball team

suffered its first loss of the season, losing, 62-28, in the second

round of the University tournament Tuesday.

Newport Coach Jen Thompson said the Sailors (2-1) had averaged 13

turnovers in their first two games, but committed 26 against the

Aztecs.

“That was the big difference,” she said. “They were the biggest

and most aggressive team we have played. We had a good second

quarter, but we didn’t come out and play like we should have played

in the second half.”

Newport will continue tourney action at Uni Friday at 6:30 p.m.,

facing Foothill in a fifth-place semifinal.

Mesa rolls in tourney

* BASKETBALL: Costa Mesa High used a strong defensive effort to

limit Valley Christian to 11 points combined in the second and third

quarter and post a 56-37 victory in the opening round of pool play at

the Valley Christian boys basketball tournament Tuesday.

Sophomore Scott Knox led the Mustangs (2-0) with 23 points and is

averaging better than 25 points per game through two games this

season.

Junior Brandon Aleson came off the benc to score 11 rebounds and

grab eight rebounds and junior Jeff Waldron chipped in with 11 points

and 12 rebounds.

The Mustangs, who return to tournament action at 6:30 p.m.

Thursday against St. Paul, built a 42-19 lead after three quarters,

holding Valley Christian without a bucket in the second half until

there were approximately two minutes remaining in the third quarter.
