Laguna routs Fullerton

Laguna Beach High freshman Jessica McKee scored a match-high five

goals Tuesday and three other Breakers broke into the scoring column

in a 13-7 nonleague victory over visiting Fullerton in girls’ water

polo action.

In addition to McKee’s scoring, junior Kat Gordon posted four

goals and freshman Breanna Duplisea and junior Anna Nelson each

scored two.

In boys’ soccer Monday, Laguna played what Coach Andy Thomas said

was his team’s best effort of the young season in beating Mission

Viejo, 1-0.

The Breakers got the win on what Thomas called an “unbelievable”

goal by starter Brendan Hexberg.

Laguna got a free kick out wide on the right wing, then Joey LeBon

sent a well-driven cross to the far post of the Mission Viejo goal.

It was then that Hexberg, a sophomore, sent an unstoppable, one touch

volley into the upper V of the goal.

“Diego Valdivia had his best game in goal, making several very

important saves to earn us the victory,” Thomas said. “Pablo

Hernandez and Taylor King were again impressive, and Brennan

Alvarado, Stuart Thomson and freshman Brennan Healey defended well to

break down Mission Viejo’s very fast and physical attack.”

The Breakers had little time to prepare for its next game on

Tuesday, as they appeared flat after having beaten Mission Viejo in

dropping a 3-1 nonleague match to Orange Lutheran.

Hernandez curled a free kick into the corner of the goal to give

Laguna a late score.

Laguna had opened its season with a 3-0 blanking of Magnolia,

getting two goals from Trey Phillips and one from Derek LeBon.

The Breakers then lost, 4-1, to Valley Christian, with Juan Luna

scoring Laguna’s lone goal. They did bounce back to tie Aliso Niguel,

1-1, behind Hernandez’s goal and an impressive performance by King at

sweeper.

In girls’ tennis, Laguna’s Katie Ochwat and Lorren Butterwick

advanced to the quarterfinal round of the CIF Doubles Championships

held at SeaCliff Tennis Club in Huntington Beach.

A second Breakers’ doubles team, Jackie Reed and Kellie Ammerman,

reached the Round of 16 before being eliminated. Claire Rietsch,

Laguna’s No. 1 player, also qualified for the Round of 16 before

being eliminated.
