Newport Harbor wins in overtime

Newport Harbor High junior Brett Perrine nailed a three-pointer with

14 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime and the

Sailors boys basketball team won, 54-49, outscoring La Costa Canyon,

8-3, in the third-place final of the Bill Reynolds Classic Saturday

at Newport.

Perrine, who scored a team-high 19 points, was 5 of 7 from

three-point range. With the Sailors trailing, 46-43, he knocked down

the game-tying three-pointer in regulation from about 27 feet out,

from the right wing.

Senior Jamie Diefenbach recorded a double-double for the Sailors

(5-1), providing 11 points and 18 rebounds, while junior Taylor Young

scored nine and grabbed 12 boards.

Pinto sparks Estancia

* Behind 31 points on 6-of-7 shooting from three-point range from

junior Carlos Pinto, Estancia built a big lead and defeated Calvary

Chapel of Santa Ana, 72-53, in the final round of consolation play in

the La Quinta tournament Saturday.

Pinto hit on 11 of 14 shots form the floor (78.5%) and tallied 26

of his 31 points in the first half. His six threes are a career high.

He hit five treys in a 84-43 victory over Whitney when he scored

35 points -- his career high.

“We got points in transition and we got Carlos spotting up,”

Estancia Coach Russell King said.

Hugo Escobedo tallied nine points, seven assists and four rebounds

while Jose Viramontes scored eight points. Scott Sankey and Ray

Verette each had six points with Dallas Kopp and Mike McDaniels each

scoring four.

Kendell Meissner scored two points. Markley also contributed five

assists.

Estancia begins the third annual Orange County Optimist Holiday

Classic, a tournament it has won the last two years, against Chino at

6 p.m. Tuesday at Garden Grove High.

Sage Hill still streaking

* Senior Kevin Joyce and junior Matt Loper each had career-high

scoring performances Saturday to lead Sage Hill School to a 72-66

consolation-bracket win over Fresno Christian in the San Diego Small

Schools tournament at Santa Fe Christian in Solana Beach.

Joyce, a probable all-tournament selection according to Coach

Steve Keith, scored 31, while Loper added 24.

It was the third straight win for the Lightning (5-2).

CdM blitzed by Century

* Corona del Mar High could not overcome a rough start and lost,

61-43, to Century in the fifth-place game of the La Quinta tournament

Saturday.

The Sea Kings (2-3) fell behind, 22-8, in the first quarter and

trailed, 36-17, at the half. Century, which hit 10 three-pointers,

improved to 4-1.

Junior Brett Hirata came off the bench to lead the Sea Kings with

13 points, while senior Adam Freede was also in double figures with

10.

CdM returns to action Wednesday at 7 p.m. facing Arroyo Grande,

the tournament’s host, in San Luis Obispo.
