UCI Tri-Delts support cancer research
B.W. COOK
During the holidays, and all year long, the Pediatric Cancer Research
Foundation makes some of the most important charitable and medical
efforts in the community.
The lives of innocent children are at risk every day. Progress has
been made, in large part because of the unfailing efforts of people
who care in conjunction with the remarkable strides made by the
medical and scientific communities. Money is a major factor, funding
the machine that searches for answers.
Forty-five local women, all alumnae of the sorority Delta Delta
Delta, joined other alumni affiliated with UC Irvine in folding
thousands of holiday cards on behalf of the foundation.
“The cards will be distributed to chain stores, social event
organizers and local businesses, who in turn, sell the cards to
customers all for the benefit of cancer research,” said Dawn Tetrault
of the Tri-Delta women.
The folding center was the Newport home of Thia Cochran, where the
ladies assembled cards designed by a local 13-year-old cancer patient
named John Mash.
The afternoon of card-folding also included a bit of Tri-Delta
business, as the group elected Wendy Schiff Woman of the Year, an
annual award of recognition coming from the Southern California
Alumni Council. Schiff was honored with the award at a holiday
luncheon, praised for her volunteer service “above and beyond the
call of duty.”
If you haven’t sent your holiday cards, call the foundation office
at (949) 859-6312. There’s still time to make a difference.
Organizers are now hard at work planning next year’s Rainbow of Hope
Fashion Show and Luncheon, to be held in Newport in support of the
Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation. Underwriting support is needed.
