Breakers stop Huntington Beach

The Newport-Mesa Breakers eighth-grade All-Net team opened the season

by defeating Huntington Beach, 61-24, in National Junior Basketball

league play.

Jamie McGee led all scorers with 17 points followed by 13 points

and 12 rebounds from Kyle Caldwell. Robbie Boyer tallied nine points

to go with five assists for Newport, the defending Southern

California section champion.

Joe Eberhard (eight), Ali Meshkin (six), Jonathan Howse (six) and

Preston Oklejas (two) capped the scoring for Newport.

In fifth- and sixth-grade girls action:

* Lakers 35, Wildcats 22:

Lindsay Anderson led the Lakers with 10 points followed by eight

from LiAnne Sarisuk and six from Adina Zepfel.

Kelly Heenan finished with eight points while Cynthia Waterman

added eight for the Wildcats.

* Globetrotters 16, Mavericks 13:

Duran Sharp scored 11 points to lead the Globetrotters while

Kassie Stratton provided strong defense.

The Mavericks had a balanced scoring attack with four points each

from Laura Martinez, Megan Wilson and Catherine Sullivan.

* Shock 33, Pirates 13:

Kadee Malone led the Shock with 12 points while Ellie Nadal

tallied eight.

Hannah Rome and Saylor Schroff anchored the defense.

Donna Etemadi and Allie Moskovits led the Pirates with four points

each while Camille Krahe led the defense.

In Boys and Girls club action:

* Pistons 41, Lakers 16:

Six of seven Pistons scored in double figures to give the team its

first win of the season.

Matt Buchanan led with 14 points followed by eight from Spencer

Rautus, who led a defense that forced 20 steals. Rautus also grabbed

eight rebounds.

Cameron Knight finished the first half with a steal and layup to

give the Pistons a 10-point lead.

The Pistons’ press took its toll on the Lakers in the second half.

The Pistons (1-1) stretched the lead to 18 at the end of the third

quarter.

Hayden Cornwell and Cody Peters each scored four points with

Peters adding three assists. Cornwell also tallied 17 rebounds and

three blocks.

Jeffery Diaz scored. three points.

Erin Purcell scored her first points of the season and added solid

rebounding while Davis Purcell held his opponent scoreless.
