Taylor Young hit an 18-foot jump shot from the left wing as time

expired to give Newport Harbor a 53-51 upset victory Tuesday over

host Calabasas in a nonleague boys basketball contest.

The Sailors (7-4) took a two-point lead in the back-and-forth

affair on a Jamie Diefenbach field goal with 28 seconds left. But the

Coyotes (8-2), coming off a victory over Mayfair to win the El Dorado

tournament and ranked No. 25 in the Southland by the Times, tied the

score on a pair of free throws by point guard Drew Housman.

With 2.6 seconds remaining, Young inbounded the ball to

Diefenbach, who led Harbor with 21 points. He gave it back to Young

for the game-winner.

“It was a very good win for us on the road,” Newport Harbor Coach

Larry Hirst said.

The Sailors used a rotation of Rafael Mouradyan, Andre Pinesett

and Alex Orth on Housman, the MVP of the El Dorado tournament,

putting a fresh defender on Calabasas’ best player every three

minutes and limiting him to five points in the second half and 14

overall.

Young finished with eight points and junior Brett Perrine added

eight points and 10 rebounds.
