Ocean View claims tourney title

The Ocean View High girls’ basketball team headed into Christmas

break by giving itself an early present Saturday.

The Seahawks’ defense held Mission Viejo to just four points in

the third quarter, then held off a late charge by the Diablos to

claim a 46-44 victory in the championship game of the Santa Ana Elks

Tournament.

Ahkiah Hunter scored 14 points, Erica Williams scored 11 including

three, three-point baskets, and D.J. Butler posted 10 points to lead

the Ocean View, which improved to 5-0 overall.

In earlier tournament action, Ocean View outscored Laguna Hills,

17-0, in the third quarter of play, and went on to post a 49-22

victory. Butler’s 13 points paced the Seahawks and Hunter added 10

points.

In pool play at the tournament, Butler scored 15 points and

Vanessa Alderfer scored 13 to lead Ocean View in a 42-39 win over

Tustin.

Huntington Beach rolled past visiting Dana Hills, 48-25, in

nonleague play. Katia Hadj-Hamou led the Oilers with 14 points.

Jessica Harris scored 19 points and Elysse Van Leer and Rebecca

Kepilino each had 15 as Edison routed Estancia, 63-36.

The Chargers also fell to Mayfair, 62-57, in pool play at the Gary

Raya Coed Classic.

In boys’ basketball, Marina won the third-place trophy at the

North Orange County Championships by defeating Rowland, 57-51.

Three Vikings finished in double figures as James Lambert, Matt

Brennan and Stephen Becker scored 19, 16 and 12 points, respectively.

Marina hit eight three-point baskets, overall, with Lambert and

Jeff Molino each hitting three of those shots.

In earlier tournament play, Marina was shaded by Villa Park,

53-52. Brennan’s 17 points topped the Vikings, Jeff DeLaunay scored

12 points and Lambert finished with 10 points.

Also at the tournament, Marina upended one of Southern

California’s top-ranked teams, St. John Bosco, 75-68, in overtime.

“Our guys played great and really did a nice job,” Marina Coach

Roger Holmes said. “It was a great team effort against a real good

team.”

Becker led the way for Marina with 23 points, 17 of which came in

the second half.

Brennan added 21 and Lambert scored 17 for the Vikings.

Edison captured fifth place at the Gary Raya Coed Tournament with

a 62-42 win over Cabrillo. Alex Wright scored a game-high 16 points,

Joe Ziemann and Kevin Reed each scored 11 points and T.J. Lipold

scored 10 for the Chargers.

In girls’ soccer, Christina Clifford’s late goal lifted Edison

past host Dana Hills, 3-2, in a battle between two of the county’s

top teams.

Amanda Draeger and Brianne Wahrenbrock also netted goals for the

Chargers.

In boys’ soccer, Ed Cholakian and B.J. Pugmire each scored goals

as Edison blanked the Kennedy Fighting Irish, 2-0.

In other boys’ soccer action, Huntington was a 3-1 nonleague

winner over University.

In girls’ water polo, Marina was a 9-6 nonleague winner over host

Brea-Olinda.
