Walker leads Sailors

Newport Harbor High senior Joel Walker scored seven goals in two

Sailor victories Saturday as the Tars finished ninth in the Trabuco

Hills boys soccer tournament at Trabuco Hills High.

Walker had five goals in a 7-1 win over Burroughs of Ridgecrest,

then scored twice in a 4-0 triumph over Santa Ana Valley in the

ninth-place game. He had nine goals in the four-game tournament.

Senior Detlef Moeller and junior Nicholas Hedriks each added goals

against Burroughs, while junior Matt Collier and senior Matt Tracy

rounded out the scoring against Valley.

Juan Cruz had four saves against Valley to post the team’s second

shutout of the year. The Sailors are now 6-3.

Newport visits Back Bay rival Corona del Mar Jan. 7 to conclude

preleague play.

Sailors win in Alaska

* BASKETBALL: Senior Jamie Diefenbach scored a game-high 15 points

and grabbed nine rebounds to help lead the Newport Harbor High boys

basketball team to a 57-52 win over Olympic of Seattle, Wash. in the

first round of pool play at the Capital City Classic in Juneau,

Alaska Saturday.

Taylor Young contributed 11 points and seven rebounds, while

Dennis Heenan also scored 11 points for the Sailors (8-4).

Newport outscored Olympic, 20-11, in the fourth quarter as it

overcame a 41-37 deficit. The Sailors committed 22 turnovers, but

regained control in the final quarter. With no shot clock, the

Sailors used patience at the offensive end, Newport assistant coach

Bryan Cottriel said.

The Sailors return to tournament action Monday, when they face

North Pole High of Fairbanks, Alaska.

Tars tinker, triumph

* BASKETBALL: A defensive adjustment after the first quarter

proved effective for the Newport Harbor High girls basketball team in

its 66-55 victory over North Pole, from Fairbanks, Alaska, to open

pool play in the Capital City Classic Saturday at Juneau-Douglas High

in Alaska.

Sharde Burkhead scored a game-high 27 points for North Pole (2-1),

but was held to 15 in the final three quarters, thanks to more double

teams and an effective press employed by the Sailors (7-4).

Vanessa Miller led Newport with 18 points, followed by 15 from

Victoria Swigart.

Ciara Lawrence and Kristi Eddington each tallied eight points

while April Slater scored seven.

Jillianne Whitfield (four), Allyson Stoltz (three) and Maaike

Trobman (three) all contributed to the Sailors’ attack.

Newport, which outscored North Pole, 19-9, in the third quarter,

hit on 6 of 10 three-pointers, including three by Swigart.

Newport committed just five turnovers.

The Tars return to action at 1 p.m. Monday against Monroe

Catholic, also from Fairbanks.

Locals score for Cal

* FOOTBALL: Cal’s 52-49 football win over Virginia Tech in the

Insight Bowl at Bank One Ballpark in Phoenix Friday night included

some heroics from Newport-Mesa athletes.

Sophomore fullback Chris Manderino, a former walk-on out of

Newport Harbor High, scored his first rushing touchdown as a Golden

Bear, carrying in from 3 yards out to help Cal pull even, 28-28 The

6-foot-1, 230-pound Manderinohad three carries for 11 yards and three

receptions for 23 yards against the Hokies.

Vince Strang, who came to Cal from Orange Coast College, also

posted his first rushing TD at Cal, taking a reverse 13 yards to

paydirt.

Strang finished his Cal career with 10 carries for 35 yards and 22

catches for 305 yards and six TDs.

Manderino’s career numbers are now 21 carries for 85 yards and 19

receptions for 171 yards and one TD.

Mesa’s slow start costly

* BASKETBALL: The Costa Mesa High boys basketball team had a

typically slow start and Kennedy took advantage to post a 47-42

victory Saturday in the consolation quarterfinals of the Orange

Holiday Classic at Chapman University.

Kennedy seized a 28-16 halftime lead, then held the Mustangs (6-5)

offCosta Mesa plays Cabrillo of Long Beach in the 13th-place

semifinal Monday at 10:30 a.m.

Sophomore Scott Knox led Mesa with 18 points, while junior Jeff

Waldron added 11 points and eight rebounds.

* SOCCER: Senior Danny Whitaker’s two goals gave the Corona del

Mar High boys soccer team two early leads, but Santa Ana Valley

rallied for a 4-2 victory in the ninth-place semifinal of the Trabuco

Hills tournament Saturday at Trabuco Hills High.

Julien Cerutti and Chris Ringstrom had assists for CdM, which led,

1-0 and 2-1, before surrendering the final three goals of the game to

absorb its first defeat of the season.

The Sea Kings (5-1-4) play host to Newport Harbor Jan. 7, before

opening Pacific Coast League play Jan. 9 at Laguna Beach.

Wolverines bite Eagles

* BASKETBALL: Senior Nancy Castro scored a team-high 18 points for

the second consecutive game, but it was not enough as Aliso Niguel

High’s girls basketball team defeated Estancia, 51-47, Saturday in a

consolation quarterfinal of the Edison-Marina tournament.

Senior guard Trisha Wase scored 13 points to go with eight assists

and two steals before fouling out early in the fourth quarter, when

the Eagles (2-9) went cold, Coach Tammette Rappa said.

Castro led the Eagles with 10 rebounds while Breanna Neal tallied

six. Imelda Pena scored nine points while Krystal Mino tallied five

points and nine assists.

The Eagles face either South Delta or West Torrance at 5 p.m.

Monday.

Saints outlast Lightning

* BASKETBALL: Host St. Anthony had just three players score, but

their combined total was enough to best Sage Hill, 43-38, in the

second round of pool play at the St. Anthony tournament Saturday in

Long Beach.

Senior Kevin Joyce scored 25 to pace the Lightning (6-4), who did

not hit a three-pointer. A Sage three-point attempt with 10 seconds

left rimmed out that would have tied the score at 41, allowing the

Saints to prevail.

Sage continues pool play against the Renaissance Academy from La

Canada, Monday at 1:30 at St. Anthony.

Malone edges Vanguard

* BASKETBALL: Visiting Malone College of Ohio edged Vanguard

University, 59-58, in a nonconference game Saturday at the Pit.

Horace Wormely led the Lions (6-5) with 13 points, five steals and

three assists, while Josh Pierson added 11points and Leon Rosborough

had 10 rebounds for the hosts.

Jason Hess had 19 points and 22 rebounds for Malone, which

improved to 8-3.
