Lance nets win with free throw

Junior forward Tyler Lance sank the second of two free throws with

less than a second remaining to give the Corona del Mar High boys

basketball team a 53-52 victory over Workman and seventh place in the

Coast Classic at Estancia High Tuesday.

Senior guard Jay Northridge led the Sea Kings (7-7) with a

season-high 26 points. He was seven of 12 from beyond the three-point

line and his three-pointer with 1:10 remaining gave CdM a 52-49 lead.

But Workman tied the score on three free throws, setting up Lance’s

game-winning point, his only point of the game.

Lions outshoot Mesa

* BASKETBALL: Sophomore Judie Akansel scored a career-high 14

points off the bench, but it wasn’t enough as the Costa Mesa High

girls basketball team fell to Westminster, 61-44, in an 11th-place

game at the Costa Mesa Winter Classic Tuesday.

Cassey Brick added 14 points to go with four assists for the

Mustangs (5-5).

Mesa got within 33-26 early in the third quarter following one of

Brick’s four three-point field goals, but missed its next three shots

and the Lions built on their lead.

Knox sets career high

* BASKETBALL: Sophomore guard Scott Knox tied his career-high with

28 points and set a personal record with seven three-pointers to lead

the Costa Mesa High boys basketball team to a 56-51 victory over Gahr

Tuesday to take 13th place in the Orange Holiday Classic at Chapman

University in Orange.

Knox hit six of his threes in the first half, when he scored 20

points. He was aided by 11 points from Marko Stankovic and nine from

Tony Krikorian. Jeff Waldron scored eight points and grabbed 10

rebounds and earned all-tournament honors.

Sophomore point guard Brian Molina tallied nine assists for Mesa

(8-5).

Lightning take fifth

* BASKETBALL: Kevin Joyce and Matt Loper, both all-tournament

selections, led the Sage Hill School boys basketball team to a

fifth-place finish at the St. Anthony tournament, defeating Aquinas

of San Bernardino, 42-29, Tuesday.

Joyce scored 23 points and Loper added seven points.

Sailors struggle up north

* BASKETBALL: Newport Harbor High’s girls basketball team

struggled Tuesday against host Juneau-Douglas High at the Capital

City Classic in Juneau, Alaska, falling 58-29.

The Sailors played well in the first quarter, but lost their

momentum when thy were outscored 16-4 in the second period.

Victoria Swigart had eight points and six rebounds for Harbor

(7-6) and Jillianne Whitfield added nine points and four rebounds.

CdM downed in OT

BASKETBALL: Corona del Mar High’s girls basketball team fought

back to take University of L.A. to overtime in pool play of the

Cavalier Classic at Santiago High, but succumbed, 59-56, after

scoring just two points in the extra period.

Kate Heeschen had 16 points to lead the Sea Kings (3-6). Lauren

Snell added nine points and eight rebounds and Megan Benbow

contributed five points, eight rebounds and five steals.
