Jake Wheeler, a Laguna Beach High senior, has been named to the

All-CIF Southern Section Division IX football team.

Wheeler started on both sides of the ball for the Breakers during

the 2003 season, and led the team in receptions.

His three touchdown receptions in a Sept. 5 game at Palos Verdes

established a new Laguna single-game record. He matched that record

with a three-touchdown effort in a Sept. 18 game at Bolsa Grande.

Wheeler also set new school records for touchdown receptions in a

season (12), receptions in a season (61) and a single-game record

with two interception returns for touchdowns in a Sept. 13 win over

La Quinta.

“Making All-CIF means a lot to me and it’s a great way to close

out my career,” he said. “I was extremely happy when Coach Holland

told me the news. It’s an honor for me to represent my school on the

first team.”

Wheeler also was named first team All-Pacific Coast League.

He was joined on the first team offense by Laguna quarterback Alex

Wilson and tight end/linebacker Brett O’Connor, both seniors.

Wilson joined Wheeler in the record books this season, his three

touchdown passes in the Palos Verdes and Bolsa Grande games setting,

then tying the school’s single-game mark.

Wilson also set a new school record for passes attempted in a

career (503), touchdown passes in a career (30) and touchdown passes

in a single season (18).

Junior wide receiver and defensive back Lewie Duker was named

second team defense.

Making the all-league honorable mention list from Laguna were the

following offensive players: senior running back Brandon Hooper,

junior lineman Jon Huerta, senior running back Juan Luna, junior

lineman Matt Rollings and junior running back Elliot Whalen.

Laguna defensive players to make the honorable mention list were

junior linebacker Sean DeGarmo and junior defensive back Scott Urban.

Duker and DeGarmo were the latest installments to Laguna’s

prestigious Black Watch team.
