Eddington lifts Newport Harbor

Junior Kristi Eddington scored a career-high 16 points for the Newport Harbor High girls basketball team, which used a 24-9

fourth-quarter edge to defeat visiting Laguna Beach, 54-45, in a

nonleague game Tuesday night.

The Sailors, who trailed, 36-30, at the end of the third quarter,

took the lead for good with four minutes, 45 seconds to go. Senior

Victoria Swigart hit a three with four minutes left to give the

Sailors (8-6) a seven-point advantage. She finished with nine points

and 12 rebounds.

Jillianne Whitfield finished with 12 points and six rebounds while

Vanessa Miller tallied seven points to go with six by Ciara Lawrence.

Eddington scored 10 of her 16 points in the fourth quarter and went 4

of 4 from the free-throw line in that period.

Newport opens Sea View League play when it hosts Foothill at 7

p.m. Thursday.

VU captures GSAC win

* BASKETBALL: Kevin Dalafu scored a game-high 19 points to lead

the Vanguard University men’s basketball team to its first Golden

State Athletic Conference victory, a 66-63 road win over The Master’s

College Tuesday.

Brett McGee came off the bench to contribute 11 points for the Lions (7-7, 1-3 in conference), who trailed 32-29 at halftime. The

Master’s (10-4, 1-2) were led by Caleb Adcock’s 17 points.

Lions grab big victory

* BASKETBALL: The Vanguard University women’s basketball team,

ranked No. 4 in the NAIA, dealt fifth-ranked The Master’s College its

first Golden State Athletic Conference loss of the season with an

80-68 victory in Santa Clarita Tuesday.

Junior point guard Lisa Faulkner led the Lions (11-1, 3-1 in

conference) with a game-high 21 points, and she also dished 12

assists. She knocked down 4 of 9 from three-point range. Cecilia

Josefsson also had four three-pointers and contributed 14 points,

while Rachel Besse (15 points), Kelly Schmidt (13) and Lindsay

McClellan (10) were also in double figures.

Sage Hill surges in win

* BASKETBALL: Sage Hill School’s girls basketball team used a

second-half surge to burst past visiting Fairmont, 57-30, in a

nonleague game Tuesday.

The Lightning outscored the Huskies, 43-18, in the final two

quarters after taking a 14-12 lead at halftime.

Debbie Yoder-Lee led the Lightning (5-5) with 18 points followed

by 17 from Katie Puishys and 16 by Haywood Wright.

Puishys had 17 rebounds while Wright tallied 12 boards to go with

four assists, two steals and five blocks.

Sage Hill boys edged

* BASKETBALL: The Sage Hill School boys basketball team failed to

get loose balls in crunch time and were edged, 36-34, by nonleague

visitor Fairmont Prep Tuesday.

Kevin Joyce scored 13 points and Matt Loper added 12 for Sage

Hill, which missed two free throws with 18 seconds left when faced

with a 35-34 deficit.

Lightning tie Lions

* SOCCER: Sage Hill School’s girls soccer team and host

Westminster dueled to a scoreless tie Tuesday in the Lightning’s

final tuneup before Academy League play.

Junior goalkeeper Laura Gordon made 11 saves for the Lightning

(4-2-1) while Rebecca Gordon, Laura’s twin sister, and Caroline

Sauter played physical defense, Sage Hill Coach Amy Ray said.

Mustangs silenced

* BASKETBALL: Senior Tanisha Lewis scored 30 points to lead the

visiting Saddleback High girls basketball team to a 61-39 victory

over Costa Mesa in the Golden West League opener for both teams

Tuesday night.

The Roadrunners, one of the favorites to win league, outscored

Mesa, 20-0, in the first quarter, making a Mustang comeback a

difficult task.

The Mustangs cut the lead to 48-36, but Lewis, who came into the

game averaging 26.5 points, knocked down a three from half court as

the buzzer sounded to end the third quarter. Brittany Vergara led the

Mustangs (5-7) with nine points while Judie Akansel had eight and

Cassey Brick tallied six. Susy Trujillo tallied five points while

Bethany Vergara (four), Heather Cluff (two), Deanna Sanchez (two),

Tracy Bjelland (two) and Venise Enesi (one) capped Mesa’s scoring.

Brick led Mesa with five rebounds and five assists while Brittany

Vergara added four rebounds.

Mesa hosts Ocean View at 7 p.m. Thursday.

CdM squanders lead

* SOCCER: Corona del Mar High girls soccer team dominated the run

of play, getting eight shots on goal, but Kennedy scored three late

goals, including an own goal by the Sea Kings, to escape with a 3-2

nonleague victory Tuesday.

Kelly Morgan and Ali Torres scored back-to-back goals within a

minute of each other early in the second half to give the Sea Kings

(3-5-1) a 2-0 lead. Hannah Rollins and Rachel Yelsey assisted on

Morgan’s goal.

Eagles fall to Seahawks

* SOCCER: Despite a strong performance from goalkeeper Marcie

Kirchberg, who had nine saves, Estancia High girls soccer team

remained winless in Golden West League play by dropping a 5-0

decision at Ocean View Tuesday.

Sage runs out of time

* SOCCER: The Sage Hill School boys soccer team closed out its

pre-league schedule with a 3-2 loss to visiting Orange Lutheran

Tuesday.

Sophomore Zack Milder scored twice for the Lightning (2-4), who

fell short of rallying from a 3-0 deficit. Milder scored in the 66th

minute and in the final minute. Senior goalie Cesar Arriaga recorded

five saves.
