Corona del Mar High’s football team may have lost out on a CIF

Southern Section playoff berth, but they were well represented on the

All-Pacific Coast League football team, placing a pair of players on

each side of the ball of the all-league first team.

Junior wide receiver Kevin Welch and senior lineman Andy Luan were

selected to the first team on offense. Senior cornerback Mordy

Ornguze and sophomore defensive end Matt Burgner were defensive

selections.

Defensive end Brian Dunn, who joined Ornguze as the only senior

starters on defense for the Sea Kings, was selected to the second

team.

Welch led CdM, which finished 5-5, on both sides of the ball. He

finished with 28 catches for 591 yards and eight touchdowns on

offense and contributed 74 tackles, three interceptions and two

fumble recoveries as a defensive back.

Lujan missed time due to injury, as did many of the Sea Kings this

season, including Welch, but when healthy, he provided a dominating

presence on the offensive line, opening holes for running backs

Austin Brawner, Brett Crowley and Wess Presson.

As one of two seniors to start on defense, Ornguze provided

leadership and a physical presence capable of lining up at the line

of scrimmage or deep in the secondary.

Burgner, one of a number of underclassman standouts for CdM,

finished his sophomore season with 35 tackles, eight sacks and a pair

of fumble recoveries and was also the Sea Kings’ leading tackler on

special teams.

Dunn, who provided a nice bookend on the opposite side of the line

of scrimmage, was CdM’s lone second-team selection.

Tesoro junior quarterback Nick Nelson was the league’s Offensive

Most Valuable Player. Mark Kazyak of league champion Northwood was

the Defensive MVP.
