Police have suspects in eatery robbery

Westminster police on Jan. 1 arrested two people who are suspected

in a string of crimes including an armed robbery at a Subway

restaurant in Huntington Beach.

“We are certain that these are the same guys that are involved in

ours,” Huntington Beach Police Lt. Janet Perez said.

The robbery at a Subway in the 6400 block of Edinger Avenue

occurred at about 6:50 p.m. Dec. 28.

The suspects, 35-year-old James Michael Vasquez and 36-year-old

Julie Anne Gaxiola were arrested without incident at about 1 p.m.,

Westminster police said.

“It was very good,” Westminster Police Lt. Derek Marsh said. “We

surprised them.”

The suspects, who were wanted by police in several Orange County

cities, had a violent run-in with a Garden Grove officer the day

before their arrest. The suspects reportedly rammed their vehicle

into a police car and fled the scene at about 5 p.m. Dec. 31, Garden

Grove police said.

Police believe the pair are responsible for 15 to 20 robberies in

Orange County.

Fraud suspect to be sentenced this month

A sentencing date has been set for a Huntington Beach man who

pleaded guilty to taking part in a fraud scheme involving what

federal prosecutors termed “sham churches and purported charities.”

Roger Nolan Lane is scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 26. Assistant

U.S. Atty. Ellyn Lindsay said Lane could face six years in prison.

Of the others involved in the scam, in which the four men used

telemarketers and mailings to solicit donations under false

pretenses, two, Gabriel Bernardo Sanchez and Timothy James Lyons,

were found guilty after a two-week trial. The fourth defendant in the

case, Steven Lawrence de la Torre, also pleaded guilty.

Before being caught, the men conned more than $7 million from

their victims, Lindsay said.
