Marina pounds Westminster

Marina High’s boys’ basketball team concluded its nonleague season

Monday with a rousing victory, as the Vikings pummeled visiting

Westminster, 87-31.

Marina combined a strong offensive game with an overpowering

defensive effort to win its 12th game in 16 outings this season.

The Vikings rolled to a 40-12 halftime lead and didn’t let up

after intermission. They outscored the Lions, 29-6, in the third

quarter to up their lead to 69-18.

The defense held Westminster under double digits in scoring in

three of four quarters.

Ten Vikings hit the scoring column, with James Lambert leading the

way with 23 points.

Matt Brennan scored 15 points, Stephen Becker had 11 and Jeff

Delaunay scored 10.

In another Monday game, Ocean View began play in the Golden West

League with a come-from-behind, 52-46 victory at Estancia.

The defending champion Seahawks trailed, 12-4, after one quarter

and 28-24 at the half, but outscored the Eagles, 18-7, in the third

quarter to take a 42-35 lead into the final period.

Matt Sargeant scored 11 points, Greg Okwudibonye scored nine

points and John Greiner and Brad Sweezy had six points apiece for

Ocean View, which won its 10th game of the season.

In other boys’ basketball, Huntington Beach concluded its

nonleague schedule with a 49-48 home victory over Katella.

Brandon McLaughlin scored 17 points, Brandon O’Bryan scored 12 and

Denis Abando had nine points to lead the Oilers in a see-saw game.

Edison dropped a 66-59 nonleague overtime decision to visiting

Laguna Beach.

Laguna scored a game-tying basket with 13 seconds remaining in

regulation play, then outscored the Chargers, 14-7, in overtime.

T.J. Lipold scored 19 points, Kevin Reed scored 14 and Pat Feducia

added nine points to lead Edison in scoring.

At the Orange County North/South Challenge, Marina fell to Mission

Viejo, 69-59, at El Toro High.

The Vikings fell to the Diablos despite getting 21 points from

Lambert, 12 from Brennan and 11 more from Becker.

Also at the North/South Challenge, Ocean View fell to El Dorado,

60-55.

The Golden Hawks outscored the Seahawks, 35-16, through the second

and third quarters, then held off a fourth-quarter Ocean View rally

to post the win.

Bear Wurts’ 22 points led Ocean View and Sargeant had 17 points.

In girls’ basketball, Huntington Beach was handed a 56-24

nonleague setback by visiting Villa Park.

Vicky Batistelli’s nine points led the Oilers, who couldn’t bounce

back from a 24-7 first quarter deficit against the Spartans.

Huntington also fell to Valencia in nonleague play, 68-50. Katia

Hadj-Hamou’s 22 points paced the Oilers and Batistelli scored eight

points.

In boys’ soccer, Huntington Beach tied Troy, 1-1, at the Claremont

Tournament.
