Heartbreakers claim their title

The Heartbreakers, a girls under-10 soccer team from AYSO Region 57,

won the Area Q championship with a victory against North Irvine in a

shootout following two sudden-death overtime periods Dec. 15.

The game was scoreless until Hailey Senske, Lindsay Susolik and

Gina Scholey each found the back of the net and goalkeeper Riley

Senske saved a potential-game tying goal, giving the Heartbreakers a

3-2 shootout edge and the victory.

The Heartbreakers finished the season undefeated (16-0-2) and will move on to the AYSO Southern California area championships in March.

Team members include: Gaby Carpenter, Kaitlyn Clark, Paige

Krueger, Campbell Moore, Kylie Mulvaney, Scholey, Hailey Senske,

Riley Senske, Katie Senske and Susolik.

Patrick Senske coaches the team with help from assistant Ken

Clark.

In club soccer action:

* The Slammers girls under-10 team, based in Newport Beach, went

undefeated through their final nine league games to capture first

place in the Coast Soccer League Silver Delta Division.

The Slammers shut out their opponents eight times during the

streak and outscored their opponents, 30-2, during that span. They

used strong defense and an opportunistic offense.

Allie Brahs, Sarah Cox, Cassidy Napolitano, Nikki Borchard and

Savannah Levin are from the Newport-Mesa area and are coached by Greg

Baker.

In AYSO Region 97 girls under-10 Silver All-Star action:

* Newport Beach United 2, Tustin 1:

Christina Young scored twice with assists from Tatum Norton and

Ali Hayes to provide the scoring for Newport, which took third place

in the Costa Mesa Classic concluded Dec. 28.

Fullbacks Amber Eary and Emily Mitchell, along with goalkeeper

Emily Browne, preserved the lead. Robin Young and striker Baily

McDonald provided aggressive ball handling.

Newport defeated Costa Mesa, 3-1, earlier in the day, needing a

victory to advance to the third-place game. Newport got two early

goals from Christina Young. Norton and McDaniel provided the assists.

Mesa got within 2-1 early in the second half, but United answered

a minute later when McDaniel scored off a pass from Natalie Duthoy.

Robin Young and Hayes provided support and strong passing.

In second-round tournament action Dec. 27:

* Newport United 1, Tustin 0:

Norton broke away from the Tustin defense and scored the game’s

lone goal with three minutes left.

Browne and Christina Young protected the goal with help from

fullbacks Eary and Mitchell.

Robin Young and McDaniel repeatedly took shots on goal.

In opening-round play Dec. 26:

* South Irvine 2, Newport Beach United 1:

South Irvine scored in the final minute to win the match.

United’s Christina Young scored on a solo shot to the game in the

second half.

Solid ball handling was provided by forwards Robin Young, McDaniel

and Duthoy.

Fullbacks Eary and Mitchell led the defense in front of goalkeeper

Browne.

* In Region 57 action:

It took two overtimes and a shootout, but the Corona del Mar boys

under-12 soccer team, nicknamed “Big Red,” defeated Back Bay rival

Newport Beach in the AYSO Region 57 Division 11 title game Dec. 16 at

Heritage Park in Irvine. CdM won the shootout, 3-1, after a scoreless

tie through regulation and two overtime periods.

CdM went up, 2-0, in the shootout with Sebastien Welch and Ryan

Kontra each scoring goals. Zach Cabin added another goal and Newport

missed its final attempt, giving CdM the victory.

CdM coaches moved midfielder Nick Taormina into goal for the

shootout.

Six CdM players were chosen as all-stars. Welch, Taormina and

Kontra were all selected to the gold all-star team while Alex

Mainthow, Mark Harnen and Neil Baker were named to the silver squad.

Big Red (13-1-1) advances to sectional play.
