Mavericks ‘Shock’-ed

Play in the Newport-Mesa National Junior Basketball League resumed

after the holiday break with the Shock defeating the Mavericks,

42-27, in girls fifth- and sixth-grade action.

Ellie Nadal led the Shock with 18 points followed by 12 from

Saylor Schroff.

Kendall Voettiner and Silvie Reynolds played tough defense and

both scored.

Emily Rosales led the Mavericks with six points while Megan Wilson

and Catherine Sullivan each contributed four points.

* Wildcats 35, Globetrotters 22:

Kathleen Eutale and Kelly Heenan led the Wildcats with 17 and

eight points, respectively.

Kelsey Woo, Duran Sharp and Kassie Stratton each had four points

for the Globetrotters.

* Lakers 38, Pirates 8:

Lindsay Anderson scored 16 points to lead the undefeated Lakers to

another win.

Alex Aiello added eight points while LiAnn Sarisuk tallied six

points for the first-place Lakers.

Camile Kahe and Nicolette Kelegian led the Pistons.

In girls third- and fourth-grade play:

* Liquidators 31, Sparks 21:

Brooke Migliori led the undefeated Liquidators with 11 points

followed by eight points from Asia Andry and six from Taylor Stefano.

Kasey Thompson led the Sparks with eight points followed by five

points from Addie Richley.

* Raptors 23, Razz-Ma-Tazz 17:

Amanda Parril and Ashley Kelegian each scored nine points to lead

the Raptors to their first victory.

Seneca Jakosky led the Razz-Ma-Tazz with four points followed by

three each from Mae-Ling Choquette, Natalie Barbaresi and Melanie

Arnold.

* Celtics 12, Trojans 11:

Annie Alvarado and Syd Raguse each scored five points to lead the

Celtics while Sarah Cox (six points) and Claire McKinnon (four

points) paced the Trojans.

* In boys action from the Boys & Girls Club of Costa Mesa:

Matt Buchanan made two free throws with three seconds left and

Cameron Knight blocked the final shot as the Pistons defeated the

Sixers, 47-46, in a Boys & Girls Club of Costa Mesa (Lou Yantorn

branch) basketball game Dec. 18.

Buchanan scored 27 points to lead the Pistons (2-1), who erased a 17-point first-quarter deficit.

The Pistons cut the Sixers’ lead to nine by halftime. Hayden

Cornwell led the second-quarter surge with six points and six

rebounds.

Davis Purcell and Devin Hovis provided the defensive spark and

Buchanan added some offense to cut the Sixers’ lead to six at the end

of the third quarter.

The Pistons trimmed the deficit further halfway through the fourth

quarter when Knight made a steal and was fouled. His free throw cut

the Sixers’ lead to four and the Pistons continued to press.

Knight and Spencer Rautus combined for a steal with Rautus scoring

and converting a free throw, cutting the Sixers’ lead to one.

The teams traded baskets and the Pistons got the ball back with 20

seconds to go, setting up Buchanan’s aforementioned free throws.
