Anteaters invade Pacific

The UC Irvine men’s basketball team will attempt to hand host

University of the Pacific its first Big West Conference loss tonight

at 7:05 at the Spanos Center in Stockton.

Pacific (8-6, 3-0 in conference) sits atop the Big West standings,

a half-game ahead of Utah State, and enters on a four-game winning

streak.

UCI (7-5, 2-1) earned its first true road win Thursday at Cal

State Northridge and can move into at least a tie for second with a

victory.

UOP Coach Bob Thomason and UCI Coach Pat Douglass are former

backcourt mates at UOP.

Tars’ Lim in semifinals

* WRESTLING: Kid Lim, a senior on the Newport Harbor High

wrestling team, earned two victories to advance to today’s semifinals

in the 119-pound division of the Estancia tournament Friday.

Lim defeated Drew Murat of Royal High from Simi Valley by a major

decision, 13-2, in a quarterfinal match. The Estancia tournament

continues today with consolation rounds starting at 10 a.m. and the

semifinal matches following.

Eagles survive on road

* BASKETBALL: Hugo Escobedo hit his second of two three-pointers

to give the visiting Estancia High boys basketball team a four-point

lead with a minute to play and the Eagles held on for a 41-39 Golden

West League victory over Saddleback Friday night.

Escobedo led the Eagles (10-7, 2-1 in league) with 11 points

followed by 10 from Mike McDaniels.

cott Sankey scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds while

Carlos Pinto added five points and nine rebounds.

Saddleback (0-3 in league) used much of the shot clock on its

possessions, making it difficult for Estancia to establish any

rhythm, Eagles Coach Russell King said.

The Eagles’ biggest lead was six in the third quarter.

Whitaker scores three

* SOCCER: Sage Hill School freshman Conrad Whitaker scored all

three goals in the game to help the visiting Lightning win their

Academy League opener Friday against Brethren Christian.

Senior Julian Smith-Newman and senior Jordan Salinger had assists

to help Whittaker produce his first career hat trick.

Senior Cesar Arriaga made four saves and Salinger finished up in

goal to help preserve the shutout.

Stern paces Sea Kings

* BASKETBALL: Sarah Stern scored 21 points for the second

consecutive night to tie her season-high and lead the host Corona del

Mar High girls basketball team to a 60-41 nonleague victory over

Avalon Friday.

Kate Heeschen added 10 points, six rebounds, five steals and five

assists while Lauren Snell added eight points, four rebounds, three

steals and three blocks. Chelsea York led Avalon with 24 points.

CdM (6-7) hosts Newport Harbor at 3:30 p.m. today.

Sage wins league opener

* BASKETBALL: Katie Puishys scored 21 points to lead the visiting

Sage Hill School girls basketball team to a 50-33 victory over

Brethren Christian in the Academy League opener for both teams Friday

night.

Puishys added 13 rebounds to notch her third straight

double-double and sixth this season while Haywood Wright added 14

points, 11 rebounds, five blocks and four steals. Wright tallied her

sixth straight double-double.

Sage Hill (6-5) outscored the Warriors, 33-13, in the second and

third quarters to erase a five-point deficit after the first quarter.

Vicky Gutierrez, Rebecca Hembarsky and Laura Schaefer each had

three assists for the Lightning.

USC rallies past UCI

* VOLLEYBALL: USC rallied to defeat the UC Irvine men’s volleyball

team, 26-30, 19-30, 30-28, 30-26, 20-18, in the opening round of the

UC Santa Barbara tournament Friday night. The Anteaters play Pacific

today at noon in the consolation bracket.

Warriors hold off Sage

* SOCCER: Brethren Christian High’s girls soccer team scored two

goals in the first four minutes and held off host Sage Hill’s attack

to post a 2-1 victory in each team’s Academy League opener Friday.

Sage Hill outshot Brethren Christian, 26-3, but junior Amy Werblin

scored the Lightning’s only goal -- off a free kick just outside the

18-yard box in the 70th minute. Freshman Ali McLaughlin drew the foul

moments earlier to set up Werblin’s free kick.

UCI women dominate

* SWIMMING: The UC Irvine women’s swim team took care of Utah with

a 142-81 win, while the Anteater men lost to the Utes, 161-81, at the

Anteater Aquatics Complex Friday.

The relay team of junior Kim Do, sophomore Lara Bjargardottir,

freshman Ashley DePaul and sophomore Katina Economides broke a

two-year school record by almost two seconds in the 400 medley relay

in 3:52.59.

Do also won the 50 freestyle (24.42) and the 200 backstroke

(2:04.76) for the Anteaters. Junior Alexis Sheridan won the 1,000

free (10:15.39) and the 500 free (4:59.49). On the men’s side, the

Utes dominated the ‘Eaters winning 11 of the 13 events.

Ringstrom leads CdM

* SOCCER: Senior Chris Ringstrom recorded his second hat trick of

the season to lead the Corona del Mar High boys soccer team to a 5-2

Pacific Coast League-opening victory over host Laguna Beach Friday.

The Sea Kings (6-2-4), who lost, 3-0, to Newport Harbor Wednesday,

scored five goals in the first half, including four goals in a

five-minute span to break away from a 1-1 tie. Julien Cerutti and

Danny Whittaker also had goals, while Jeritt Thayer, Dominic Rubino

and Cerutti added an assist each.

CdM goalie Jay Zimmerman had three saves.

Sailors tie Foothill, 1-1

* SOCCER: Newport Harbor High’s girls soccer team opened Sea View

League play with a 1-1 tie against visiting Foothill Thursday.

Senior Barbara Julian scored from just outside the 18-yard box in

the 55th minute to tie the Knights, who had taken the lead minutes

into the second half on a goal off a corner kick.

Junior Stephanie Lambrakis played well in her second consecutive

game at sweeper, Newport Coach Brandie Hayungs said, while goalkeeper

Kara DeMille turned away Foothill shots.

Brethren trounces Sage

* BASKETBALL: Host Brethren Christian High built an 18-point

halftime lead and went on to a 67-40 boys basketball victory over

Sage Hill School in the Academy League opener for both Friday at the

Warrior Center in Cerritos.

Sophomore guard Matt Loper led the Lightning (8-6) with 17 points

and senior Kevin Joyce added 10, including both of the visitors’

three-pointers.

Newport loses opener

* SOCCER: The Newport Harbor High boys soccer dropped its Sea View

League opener, 2-0, to visiting Foothill Friday.

Newport Coach Ryan Hernandez said the Saliors (7-4) dominated the

second half, but could not rally from a 1-0 deficit, and then the

Knights gained a late goal. Warren Junowich and Chase Kelly turned in

noteworthy performances for Newport, Hernandez said.

Pirates fall to Cypress

* BASKETBALL: Alisa Carrillo scored 22 points and grabbed 13

rebounds but the host Orange Coast College women’s basketball team

fell to Cypress, 66-58, in an Orange Empire Conference game Friday.

Cypress overcame a two-point halftime deficit by hitting 18 of 23

free throws in the second half. Brittany Imaku led Cypress with 24

points, making 10 of 13 from the line. Rhondi Naff added 11 points

for OCC (8-8, 1-1 in conference) and Charlenda Van Buren had seven

points and 10 rebounds.

Estancia shut out

* SOCCER: Estancia High boys soccer coach Steve Crenshaw said his

team lacked passion and energy and lost, 3-0, to Golden West League

host Saddleback Friday.

“There was absolutely no intensity at all,” said Crenshaw, whose

team dropped to 4-4-4, 1-1-2 in league. “We were just flat. I told

them after the game, I felt like taking a nap.”
