1950s art on display at Newport library

Artist Robert Ecker’s series of mezzotint prints capturing images

of his youth in California in the 1950s are on display through

February in the foyer of the Newport Beach Central Library.

Mezzotint engraving involves burnishing images onto plates.

Admission is free. The library is at 1000 Avocado Ave., Newport

IKEA to reward those wearing pajamas

Costa Mesa’s IKEA store will hold a variety of events Saturday

through Monday, including a contest to win a bedroom set, a

children’s pajama party and home furnishing workshops.

The Swedish furniture store will celebrate the bedroom with free

breakfasts from 9:30 to 11 a.m. for visitors dressed in their

pajamas; free massages from noon to 3 p.m. each day; and sale offers

all weekend.

IKEA will donate $10 to the Orange County chapter of the Red Cross

for every bed frame purchased during the event. At 10:30 a.m.

Saturday, guests can enter the sleepyhead contest, in which the

person who stays in bed longest will win a free bedroom set.

The pajama party will be held at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, and home

furnishing workshops will be given at 11 a.m. and 1, 3 and 5 p.m.

Monday. The IKEA store is at 1475 South Coast Drive.

Republican women to host state candidates

The Newport Harbor Republican Women will hold a forum on Thursday

for GOP candidates for the 70th Assembly District and the 35th state

Senate District.

Candidates on the slate are Cristi Cristich, Chuck DeVore,

Chonchol Gupta, Don Wagner and Marianne Zippi for the Assembly seat

and John Campbell, Ken Maddox and Joe Snyder for the state Senate

seat.

The event at the Pacific Club, 4110 MacArthur Blvd. in Newport

Beach, will begin with a social hour at 11:30 a.m. and continue with

Funding available for urban forestry projects

The National Tree Trust and California ReLeaf has announced that

funds are available to community-based groups for urban forestry

projects.

Grants from $1,000 to $7,500 are available from the California

Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. The grants are for

projects in one of three groups: tree planting; tree care and

education; or outreach and volunteer development.

Home Buyer Assistance Program has funds

The City of Costa Mesa Redevelopment Agency has funds available

for the Home Buyer Assistance Program.

The program offers down payment assistance of up to $40,000 in the

form of a deferred second mortgage to households earning no more than

the 120% of the Orange County median. Home buyers must provide at

least a 3% down payment and be creditworthy. The purchase price limit

is $419,000.
