Ball captures junior title

Corona del Mar High junior Carsten Ball defeated Cale Planck of Palm

Springs, 6-1, 6-1, Sunday to claim the boys 18s title of the San

Diego Junior Singles tournament at Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego.

Ball, seeded No. 3, won four matches at the two-weekend tournament

to earn the title.

Planck was the No. 5 seed.

VU honors McClellan

* BASKETBALL: Vanguard University freshman women’s basketball

standout Lindsay McClellan has been named Lion of the Week by the

school.

McClellan, a 5-foot-7 guard from Tempe, Ariz., had the best week

of her young collegiate career, averaging 10.3 points, two assists

and two steals in three Vanguard victories.

She scored a career-high 14 points and a career-best four assists

in a Dec. 29 win over Pikeville College of Kentucky in the Golden

State Athletic Conference challenge. She was named to the GSAC

challenge all-star team.

Sailors defeat Knights

* WATER POLO: Newport Harbor High senior Carolyn Conway scored a

team-high five goals to lead the Sailors to a 12-7 nonleague girls

water polo victory over The Bishop’s School, Saturday in La Jolla.

Senior Jessica Ball and junior Anne Belden added three goals

apiece for the Sailors, who improved to 8-1, while handing the

Knights their first loss in 12 games this season.

Ball, Belden and junior Melissa Wheeler had three steals apiece

for the winners, while Belden, junior Ashling Taylor and sophomore

Leah Robertson each collected two assists.

Senior Terin Cottam made six saves and senior Kim Housepian five

for Newport Harbor.

The Sailors led, 10-4, at halftime and, after being outscored,

3-0, in the third quarter, blanked the Knights in the final period.

Anteaters finish sixth

* VOLLEYBALL: The UC Irvine men’s volleyball team was defeated by

UC Santa Barbara, 30-28, 30-25, 30-24, in the fifth-place match of

the UCSB Elephant Bar Classic Saturday in Goleta.

The Anteaters defeated University of the Pacific in a five-game

match Saturday to reach the fifth-place final.

UCI blew a two-game lead in a 26-30, 19-30, 30-28, 30-26, 20-18

loss to USC in Friday’s first round.

Coach John Speraw said his team’s 25 service errors allowed the

Trojans to rally for the victory.

The Anteaters play a team of alumni Wednesday at 7 p.m. at

Crawford Court, before opening Mountain Pacific Sports Federation

play Friday at Pacific.

CdM rolls over Aztecs

* ROLLER HOCKEY: The Corona del Mar High club roller hockey team

defeated Esperanza, 6-1, Thursday at the Worldwide Roller Hockey

Center in Irvine.

CdM captain Matt Benvenuti led all scorers with four goals, while

Danny Freeman and Ara Vehian also scored for the winners.

Jared Mortenson and Spencer Aguilar had assists for CdM, which

received 35 saves from goalie Eric Mirowitz.
