Retiring firefighters stop sprung hydrant

The last day of work was a wet one for two retiring Newport Beach

fire department employees who were called to stop a water-spewing

fire hydrant on Tuesday.

A delivery truck struck a hydrant in front of 107 30th St. on the

Balboa Peninsula, causing a spray of water about 25 feet into the

air, fire department spokeswoman Jennifer Schulz said.

Responding to the call at 11:44 a.m. were Engineer Robbie Dobbie

and Capt. Dick Dart, both of whom retired Tuesday after more than

three decades with the department. At the scene of the accident,

they simply turned off the water, Schulz said.

Vehicle flips on the freeway

An accident on the southbound Costa Mesa Freeway Tuesday involved

an overturned vehicle and caused a patient to be airlifted to a local

trauma center, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The vehicles involved were a Chevy Malibu and a pickup truck. The

accident occurred north of Bay Street at 2:49 p.m. California Highway

Patrol officials said they had no information about the victim’s or

vehicles’ condition.
