Overtime spells win for Oilers

Huntington Beach High was the lone local to open Sunset League play

on a winning note.

The Oilers overcame a four-point deficit entering the fourth

period against visiting Fountain Valley, then went on to outscore the

Barons by four points in overtime to win, 49-45.

Brandon McLaughlin scored more than half of Huntington’s points

and emerged as the game’s high scorer with 28 points.

In other Sunset openers, Marina lost at Esperanza, 53-41, and

Edison fell to visiting Los Alamitos, 68-49.

Matt Brennan scored 20 points and Stephen Becker had 10 points for

Marina.

Kevin Reed scored 15 points and Pat Feducia scored 12 more to lead

Edison in scoring.

In nonleague play, Marina held off a late rally by visiting Serra

to post a 45-44 victory.

Brennan’s 15 points led the Vikings and Blake Overend scored 10

points.

Ocean View used a 34-7 third-quarter advantage over host Orange to

pull away to a 78-49 Golden West League victory, the Seahawks’ third

in league play.

Bear Wurts poured in a game-high 27 points for the Seahawks and

teammate Greg Okwudibonye finished with 12 points.

In girls’ basketball, Ocean View routed host Costa Mesa, 58-31, to

win to improve to 2-0 in Golden West League play.

Four Seahawks scored in double figures: Erica Williams led all

scorers with 17 points, Leila Abufarie scored 15 and Vanessa Alderfer

and DJ Butler each scored 11.

Edison won its Sunset League opener by defeating host Los

Alamitos, 49-25.

The Chargers’ defense didn’t allow the Griffins more than eight

points in each quarter.

Rebecca Kepilino led all scorers with 22 points and teammate

Jessica Harris scored 10.

Marina played Esperanza tough, but dropped a 36-30 game. Katherine

Hennes scored six points to lead the Vikings.

Huntington Beach also fell in its Sunset opener, 41-36, at

Fountain Valley. Katia Hadj-Hamou scored 16 points to pace the Oilers

on offense.

In boys’ soccer, Ocean View routed Costa Mesa, 11-0. Jaime

Martinez netted six goals, Augustin Velez and Miguel Cruz each scored

twice and Jeff Roth scored once.

Roth and Cruz split goaltending duties and each made eight saves

to secure the shutout.

Ocean View also edged league rival Orange, 2-1. Martinez and Cruz

scored goals and Roth had six saves as the Seahawks improved to 4-0-1

in league action.

Edison needed overtime to subdue Huntington Beach, 4-3, in the

Sunset League opener for both teams.

Jon Kelsey scored twice to lead Huntington.

In girls’ soccer, Edison won its Sunset League opener by defeating

Los Alamitos on the road, 1-0. Brianne Wahrenbrock’s goal, off a

Maile Lawrence assist, proved to be the difference.

Kelsey Bowman had four saves to record the shutout.

Huntington earned a 1-1 tie at Fountain Valley in another Sunset

League opener.

In girls’ water polo, Marina was a 4-2 winner over Esperanza.
