High school parking lot use discussed

The Huntington Beach Union High School District has scheduled a

meeting on plans to manage district property.

In a meeting scheduled for 2 p.m. on Friday at Huntington Beach

High School, the District Advisory Committee will gather public

opinion on whether to declare a section of the school’s parking lot a

surplus area. The committee can make a recommendation on whether to

declare the lot surplus, but the final decision will be made by the

school board.

The district has already declared the maintenance yard on the

campus to be surplus. If both areas are declared surplus, the board

can decide on plans to develop the yard, or to move parking spaces to

the yard and develop a section of the parking lot.

The meeting is scheduled to take place in the school’s Student

Center. The address is 1905 Main St.

Union district educators get a raise

Teachers and staff at the Huntington Beach Union High School

district were awarded a 1% pay raise on Tuesday.

In a series of 4 to 1 votes, the district board of trustees

approved the pay increase, retroactive to July 1, 2003.

Board President Michael Simons called the raise a “good faith

effort” to show the district’s appreciation for its employees’ work.

Trustee Matthew Harper was the only board member to vote against

the raises. Concerned that the state’s financial troubles make it too

risky for the district to spend more money, he said he was worried

the district would have to reduce staffing to up pay rates.

“The only way for the slices to get fatter is fewer slices,”

Harper said. The trustees who voted for raises were confident the

district could afford them, Simons said, adding that the district was

maintaining its 3% reserve and had funds available.

“We’re confident we’re not putting ourselves in any type of fiscal

jeopardy,” he said.
