Costa Mesa’s defense stops Orange

Despite shooting 10 for 52 from the field (19%), the Costa Mesa High

girls basketball team played solid defense to score a 34-21 Golden

West League victory over host Orange Thursday.

Cassey Brick led the Mustangs (7-8, 1-2 in league) with 10 points,

while Deanna Sanchez contributed five assists. Susy Trujillo scored

eight points, grabbed six rebounds and recorded four steals, and

Bethany Vergara collected five rebounds and four steals.

Mesa held Orange (0-3 in league) to one point in the second

quarter and held an 18-9 lead at the break. The Mustangs led 24-19

early in the fourth quarter, then Trujillo scored five straight

points to help secure the win.

Costa Mesa was 3 for 30 from behind the three-point line (10%) and

11 of 24 from the free-throw line (45.83%). The Mustangs held Orange

to 26.31% shooting from the field (10 for 38).

“We played very hard defensively,” Mustangs Coach Jim Weeks said.

“We just played with a lot of heart tonight.”

Mesa shuts out Orange

* SOCCER: The Costa Mesa High girls soccer team dominated host

Orange and collected a 3-0 Golden West League victory Thursday.

Kyla Flores scored on an assist from Stacy Krikorian, seven

minutes into the game. Then, in the 50th minute Kristen Paulsen

finished off an assist from Nilani Duarte. In the 79th minute, Duarte

capped the scoring with a goal on Caitlin Duffy’s assist.

Goalie Kindra Bailey had two saves for the Mustangs (7-5, 4-0 in

league), who outshot Orange, 32-2.

Sea Kings pin Trojans

* WRESTLING: The Corona del Mar High wrestling team recorded eight

victories and earned its first Pacific Coast League win, 41-29, over

visiting University Thursday.

CdM freshman Tom Folks pinned his opponent in 27 seconds in the

125-pound division. Brian Feeley (135-pound division) also won by pin

for the Sea Kings (8-7, 1-3 in league), while Taylor Alston (112)

scored a technical fall victory with a 21-6 result.

Dean Moheimani (140) won in overtime, 6-4, while Eston Greub

(119), Isaac Inouye (145), Ryan Shores (160) and Andrew Keligian

(215) also collected victories.

Defense keys Eagles win

* BASKETBALL: Nancy Castro scored 24 points and had six rebounds

to lead the host Estancia High girls basketball team to a 48-24

Golden West League victory over Santa Ana Thursday night.

The Eagles trailed, 8-7, after one quarter, but outscored the

Saints, 41-16, the rest of the game.

Trisha Wase tallied 10 points, five rebounds and 10 steals as the Eagles’ defense turned up the intensity, Estancia Coach Tamette Rappa

said.

Olivia Maldonado had seven points to go with five from Imelda Pena

and two from Krystal Mino, who also added six steals. Castro made

five steals.

Estancia (6-11, 3-1 in league) hosts rival Costa Mesa at 7 p.m.

Tuesday.

Swigart leads Sailors

* BASKETBALL: Victoria Swigart scored 14 points, grabbed 14

rebounds and recorded four steals to lead the Newport Harbor High

girls basketball team to a 44-32 Sea View League victory over host

Irvine Thursday.

Vanessa Miller scored 10 points for the Sailors (11-7, 2-1 in

league), while Allyson Stoltz provided eight points, three steals and

four assists.

Irvine (8-10, 1-2) led at halftime, 18-16, but Newport improved on

defense in the second half, pushed the ball in transition and scored

on high percentage shots, Newport Coach Jen Thompson said.

“What saved us is that we were 14 for 20 at the free-throw line

and they were 4 for 7,” Thompson said. “That was kind of the game

right there.”

Sea Kings upended

* SOCCER: The Corona del Mar High girls soccer team could not

convert on its scoring chances and lost, 1-0, to host University in

Pacific Coast League action Thursday.

University’s Brittany Kausen scored in the 10th minute from near

the 18-yard box, CdM coach Bryan Middleton said. Ali Torres nearly

scored for the Sea Kings (4-6-2, 1-1-1 in league) in the 70th minute,

and in the closing minutes Hannah Rollins’ shot just went wide left.

Goalie Katie Schiesser had four saves for Corona. The Trojans

improved to 7-8-1, 2-1.

UCI loses on last shot

* BASKETBALL: The UC Irvine women’s basketball team suffered its

sixth straight loss, as Casandra Reeves hit a jumper with two seconds

left to lead UC Riverside to a 55-53 Big West Conference victory over

the visiting Anteaters Thursday.

Christina Callaway led the Anteaters (1-11, 0-4 in conference)

with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Courtney Ferguson and Katie

Urban scored 10 points each. UC Riverside (2-10, 1-2 in conference)

scored 18 points from UCI turnovers, while the Anteaters had eight

points from Highlander miscues.

UCI committed 23 turnovers. Crystal Harris’ 13 points led UCR,

which had 10 turnovers.

Newport edged again

* SURFING: For the second straight meet, the Newport Harbor High

surf team had to win the final heat, but lost as they were dealt an

88-80 setback to Dana Hills at 56th Street.

Joey Head and Erica Hosseini won their heats in the short board

competition, while Brett Catron and Steve Farmer finished second in

their respective heats for the boys. Christian Morabito took third

for the Sailors (8-4).

Matt Kretschmar finished second in the body board event, and Jill

Austin also had a second-place finish in the girls long board

competition.

Tars fall to Warriors

* WRESTLING: Newport Harbor High suffered its second Sea View

League wrestling loss, 61-16, to undefeated Woodbridge in the

Sailors’ gym Thursday.

Kid Lim (119-pound division), Michael Ortiz (189) and Fabian

Vasquez (heavyweight) earned victories for the Sailors (5-5, 0-2 in

league). Lim won on a major decision over Ryan Lampert, Ortiz won by

default over Teddy Joines and Vasquez pinned Matt Haffner in 3:13.

Woodbridge improved to 10-0, 2-0 in league.

Enns is Lion of Week

* BASKETBALL: Vanguard University junior men’s basketball player

Greg Enns, who helped the Lions get two Golden State Athletic

Conference victories last week, has been named Lion of the Week by

the school.

A 6-foot-7 forward, Enns had five points and three rebounds in the

Jan. 6 upset of The Master’s. He then had 10 points and five boards

in a victory over Hope International Saturday.

Enns’ VU career includes recognition as an NAIA Scholar-Athlete

and VU’s Male Champion of Character in 2003.

Adnan, Sheridan honored

* SWIMMING: UC Irvine swimmers Kareem Adnan and Alexis Sheridan

were named Big West Conference Athlete of the Week for their

performances against Utah and Wyoming.

Adnan helped the Anteaters to victory against Wyoming, winning

with 500- and 1,000-yard freestyle events. Against Utah, he won the

500 free and finished second in the 1,000. Adnan’s fastest times in

each event came in the dual meet against Utah. He recorded a 9:41.03

time in the 1,000 free and a 4:42.38 time in the 500 free.

Sheridan helped the Anteaters to dual-meet victories over Utah and

Wyoming with victories in the 500 and 1,000 freestyle events. Her

times of 4:59.49 in the 500 free and 10:15.39 in the 1,000 each came

in the races against Utah. Sheridan’s time in the 1,000 is the

third-fastest among Big West swimmers this season.

Gagne to speak Jan. 22

* BASEBALL: Eric Gagne, the 2003 Cy Young Award winner from the

Dodgers, will be the featured speaker at the third annual UC Irvine

Baseball Zot Stove Dinner at the Hyatt Regency in Irvine Jan. 22.

The event, which also features Anteater head coach John Savage,

begins with a reception at 6:30 p.m. followed by the dinner and

program at 7:30 p.m. Cost of the dinner is $1,000 per table or $100
