Corona del Mar riding high

The Corona del Mar High varsity club team continued its season-long

dominance of the Interscholastic Equestrian League competition

Saturday and Sunday at the fourth and fifth IEL shows at Oaks

Blenheim equestrian facility in San Juan Capistrano.

Freshman Kate Wilson (Sunday) and senior Julia Koetting (Saturday)

finished third in the overall varsity individual standings to help

CdM win the overall varsity class team competition each day.

Sunday, CdM’s varsity posted 181 team points, 75 better than

runner-up Santa Margarita. Saturday, CdM had 177 points to Santa

Margarita’s 133.

In Sunday’s show, Wilson finished first in two varsity jumpers

events and was second in a third.

CdM junior Elyse Avila was first in varsity English pleasure,

while Koetting, senior Whitney Roy, junior Nicole Kim and junior

Cliff Bogart all earned top-three finishes in individual events.

Ambre Smith, representing Sage Hill, also won one varsity jumpers

event and was second in another.

Kim, who finished fifth overall Sunday among varsity riders, was

second in English pleasure and third in the IEL medal competition.

Roy, sixth overall Sunday among varsity riders, was second in

equitation over fences and second in IEL medal.

Avila added a third-place finish in equitation over fences Sunday

to share ninth place in the individual overall standings with

Koetting and Bohart.

Koetting was third in varsity working hunters and hunt seat

equitation Sunday, while Bohart was second in one jumpers event and

third in another.

Junior Jessica Cardelucci had fourth-place showings in a pair of

jumpers events to contribute to the CdM varsity team victory Sunday.

In varsity competition Saturday, Wilson, Roy and Bohart each won

jumpers events and Koetting topped CdM riders with a third-place

overall individual finish.

Koetting was second in working hunters and IEL medal and third in

hunt seat equitation to highlight her Saturday performance.

Bohart was second and fourth in additional jumpers events to wind

up fourth in the overall varsity individual standings Saturday.

Roy, fifth overall Saturday among varsity riders, won the

equitation over fences class and was also fourth in working hunters.

Kim, tied for seventh overall Saturday, was third in equitation

over fences, third in working hunters and fourth in hunt seat

equitation.

Wilson added a second-place showing in a jumpers event to finish

eighth overall individually Saturday, while Cardelucci had top

finishes of third and fourth in separate jumpers events.

CdM has won every varsity team title at the five shows this season

and is currently second in the overall team standings (all divisions)

for the season.

Freshman Melissa Moss represented CdM in the novice division.

Saturday, her top finish was second in equitation over fences.

Sunday, she was fifth in the same class to go along with three other

top-10 finishes.

CdM’s Katie Wade, competing in the western novice division, had a

top showing of 10th in the western trail event Sunday.

In the junior varsity division, CdM’s Katie Jones finished tied

for 10th overall Saturday, including a first-place showing in

equitation over fences. She finished seventh twice and eighth twice

in events Sunday.

In the freshmen division, Tina DiSano helped CdM earn a

seventh-place team finish. She was second in two dressage events

Saturday and was second and fourth in two dressage events Sunday.

Paige Harryman also competed for CdM in the freshmen division. Her

top finish Saturday was fifth in equitation over fences and her best

finish Sunday was seventh in working hunters.

Kathryn Purford, representing Newport Harbor in the freshmen

division, had a fifth-place finish in working hunters Saturday to

highlight her two days of competition.

The next IEL show is scheduled Feb. 22 at Oaks Blenheim.
