Honorees featured at Sunday brunch

The Patriot of the Year has been named. This year’s honoree is Bill

Schuster of Schuster & Sons Auto Repair. Schuster is a decorated

World War II Army veteran.

The Citizen of the Year is Doris Shields, who has founded

community events such as the Concerts in the Park.

The Junior Citizens of the Year are Laguna Beach High School

seniors Maddie Bell and Taylor King.

The 38th annual Laguna Beach Patriot’s Day Parade will be on March

6. The public is invited to meet the honorees at a brunch from 11

a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 8 at Tivoli Terrace, 650 Laguna Canyon Road. The

cost is $20.

On the lookout for great gardens

The Laguna Beach Garden Club wants the public’s help in finding

gardens good enough for the Spring Garden Tour on May 6.

Event Chairwoman Catherine Hall said the tour is self-guided and

the location must be accessible on foot with adequate street parking

nearby.

Ticket sales are limited and starting points are staggered to

ensure no garden has an overwhelming number of visitors at any time.

The tour will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Adult discussion group sets this year’s meetings

The adult current affairs discussion group Great Decisions will

launch its 2004 series at 7 p.m. Jan. 27.

The eight weekly two-hour meetings will be at the Laguna Beach

Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 429 Cypress Drive.

Great Decisions is a nationwide instructional program of the

Foreign Policy Assn. and is co-sponsored in the Laguna Beach area by

the Social Action Committee of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship,

the Interfaith Coalition of Laguna Beach and the League of Women

Voters.

The eight discussion topics selected for the 2004 series are

“Media and Foreign Policy,” “The Philippines,” “Weapons of Mass

Destruction,” “U.S. and Europe,” “Diversity in Islam,” “Latin

American Overview,” “Middle East Reform” and “Public Diplomacy.”

There is no charge for participation and the cost for buying the

discussion guide and sharing the rental charge for videos is less

than $20.

English as a second language course set

English as a second language classes are set to begin Jan. 26.

They will run through June 17.

The free class will be from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday through

Thursday in Room 22 at Laguna Beach High School, 625 Park Ave.
