Man arrested in hit-and-run

A Laguna Hills man was arrested by the Orange County Sheriff’s

Department on suspicion of a hit-and-run accident involving several

vehicles.

Jose Ramirez, 31, was arrested after a 1996 Ford Mustang speeding

in a parking lot reportedly struck a 2000 Honda at an apartment

complex in the 100 block of San Tropez Court at around 8:30 a.m. Jan.

9.

The collision with the Honda reportedly caused a domino effect

that led to damage to a Ford Taurus and a 2000 Chevy.

Police believe the Mustang then collided with a 2002 Honda and a

2003 Pontiac.

Damage to the vehicles involved was described as from moderate to

minor.

Ramirez was arrested in Laguna Hills in the 22000 block of

Caminito Esteban after Laguna police broadcast suspect information on

a shared police frequency.

Motorcyclist critically injured

An Irvine motorcyclist was critically injured after a traffic

collision near the intersection of Glenneyre and Legion streets on

Monday at about 12:36 p.m.

The 29-year-old motorcycle rider “suffered critical injuries that

may become fatal,” Sgt. Darin Lenyi said.

Police did not discuss details of the accident, which is still

under investigation. The vehicles involved in the crash were a Suzuki

600 motorcycle and a BMW 740I driven by 54-year-old Laguna Beach

resident Patricia Hughes.

The motorcyclist was taken to Mission Hospital for treatment.

Police would not disclose the nature of his injuries.

Burglary suspected to be one of series

Police are investigating a burglary in connection with an apparent

series of commercial thefts in the Downtown area that began in

December.

Police believe the burglary was committed between 6:15 and 10:55

p.m. Jan. 8. How Original art gallery, in the 500 block of South

Coast Highway, reported $190 in cash missing.

Police believe the theft is connected to earlier incidents because

investigators have found the suspects seem to be using similar

techniques to break in to businesses.

“The door had been picked open,” Sgt. Darin Lenyi said.

So far, police do not have a description of suspects or of any

vehicle they may have used.

Citizen Police Academy underway

The Laguna Beach Police Department’s Citizen Police Academy has 26

people enrolled for its latest course. The first session was held

Jan. 7.

Students in the 12-week program will learn about how officers

investigate crimes and have a chance to shoot at the police firing

range and tour Orange County Jail.

“They’re going to learn all about law enforcement and the Laguna

Beach Police Department,” Sgt. Darin Lenyi said.
