Newport, Foothill rematch set

The Newport Harbor High girls water polo team earned two victories,

including a 10-7 quarterfinal win over Riverside Poly Friday to

advance to a semifinal where it will meet Foothill in the Santa

Barbara Tournament of Champions.

The Sailors (11-1) opened the day with a 9-7 win over Carlsbad as

Carolyn Conway led the way with three goals, and Jessica Ball and

Anne Belden added two each. Ashling Taylor and Leah Robertson

provided one goal each. Melissa Wheeler and Taylor recorded two

steals each.

Newport then defeated Riverside Poly, which upset Montebello with

an 8-7 overtime win in the first round. Belden scored a team-high

four goals against Riverside, while Conway contributed three, Taylor

two and Ball one. Belden also had three steals.

Goalies Terin Cottam and Kim Housepian recorded seven and five

saves, respectively, in the two games.

Newport, which ended Foothill’s 49-game winning streak with a 10-9

overtime win Wednesday, will face the Knights today at 12:20 p.m. The

championship game is scheduled for 4:50 p.m., and the third-place

game is at 3:50.

CdM splits in tourney

* WATER POLO: The Corona del Mar girls water polo team split their

games at the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions Friday.

The Sea Kings (6-7) lost to Long Beach Wilson, 4-3, in a

quarterfinal. Katya Eadington scored early in the fourth quarter to

tie the game, 3-3, but Wilson answered a few minutes later with a

goal on a six-on-five opportunity. Katie Kubas and Vivian Liao also

scored one goal each, and goalie Brittany Fullen recorded nine saves.

CdM defeated El Toro, 9-4, to reach the quarterfinals.

‘Eaters oust Tigers

* VOLLEYBALL: Jimmy Pelzel recorded a match-high 24 kills to lead

the UC Irvine men’s volleyball team to a four-game win over host

University of the Pacific in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation

opener for both teams Friday.

Jasyon Jablonsky added 11 kills for UCI, which defeated the

Tigers, 30-26, 31-29, 34-36, 30-25. UCI setter Brett Reid led the

Anteaters (3-2) with 52 assists, while Kyle Weichert had three

service aces and five block assists.

Tars race past Irvine

* BASKETBALL: Newport Harbor High’s boys basketball team jumped to

a 10-0 lead and never looked back in a 60-47 Sea View League victory

over host Irvine Friday night.

Junior Taylor Young scored 21 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to

lead Newport (11-7, 2-1 in league) while Brett Perrine and Dennis

Heenan each scored 10 points.

Wells taken in MLS

* SOCCER: Zach Wells, a Newport Harbor High product and a former

UCLA standout goalie, was selected with the first pick in the third

round (21st overall) by the New York/New Jersey MetroStars in the

2004 MLS SuperDraft Friday.

Wells, who set a school record for lowest goals against average in

a season (0.52), was the fourth of five goalies taken in the draft

that included six rounds and 60 selections, which featured five

Bruins.

Yoder-Lee leads Sage

* BASKETBALL: Sophomore Debbie Yoder-Lee scored a career-high 25

points to pace the Sage Hill School girls basketball team to a 65-18

Academy League victory over visiting Capistrano Valley Christian

Friday.

Yoder-Lee added 10 steals and five assists for Sage, which built a

27-9 halftime lead.

Sophomore Rebecca Hembarsky tied her career-high with 10 points --

set earlier this season -- while Haywood Wright (11 points) and Katie

Puishys (nine points) added to the scoring.

* BASKETBALL: A defensive surge helped host Sage Hill School pull

away from Capistrano Valley Christian for a 41-25 Academy League boys

basketball triumph Friday.

Kevin Joyce (16 points and nine rebounds), Matt Loper (11 points

and five assists) and Tim Lefler (nine points and four steals) paced

the winners.

Eagles top Mariners

* WATER POLO: The Estancia High girls water polo team, leading,

6-4, at halftime, turned up its defensive intensity and claimed a

10-4 nonleague victory over visiting Pacifica Friday.

Coach Bob Bandaruk said senior Britta Pitti and sophomore Carolina

Barnes were responsible for shutting down the Mariners’ two-meter

set, resulting in the second-half shutout.

Estancia sophomore goalie Katie Mahan had 10 saves.

Walker wears out Vaqs

* SOCCER: Senior Joel Walker scored two goals to lead the visiting

Newport Harbor High boys soccer team to a 4-1 Sea View League victory

over Irvine Friday.

Walker scored his second goal and team-leading 23rd goal on a

penalty kick in the second half while Will Guzman and Detlef Moeller

each added scores for Newport (9-4, 2-1 in league), which led from

start to finish. Guzman scored Newport’s fourth goal on a penalty

kick.

Coast women triumph

* BASKETBALL: Alisa Carrillo scored 25 points and Rhondi Naff

added 24 to lead the Orange Coast College women’s basketball team to

a 82-78 victory over Orange Empire Conference host Saddleback Friday.

Carrillo and Lauren Stepnaski grabbed 10 rebounds each for the

Pirates (10-8, 3-1), the defending state champions. The Gauchos

dropped to 12-6, 2-2.

OCC men downed

* BASKETBALL: The Orange Coast College men’s basketball led by two

at halftime, but went on to lose to Orange Empire Conference power

Saddleback, 60-46, Friday in Mission Viejo.

Jason Garey led the Pirates (4-12, 1-3 in conference) with 14

points. OCC led, 24-22, at halftime. The Gauchos improved to 14-3,

4-0.

Sea Kings tie University

* SOCCER: The Corona del Mar High boys soccer team had one solid

scoring chance in each half, but instead settled for a 0-0 tie with

Pacific Coast League host University Friday.

Goalie Jay Zimmerman anchored the defense with 13 saves for CdM (6-3-5, 1-0-2 in league). Senior Danny Whitaker “had a very good

chance” to score in the first half, Sea King Coach Pat Callaghan

said. And, senior Julien Cerutti, “had an outstanding chance on a

25-yard shot that [the University goalie] made a nice save on,” in

the second half.

Uni too much for CdM

* BASKETBALL: All 11 players scored for the Corona del Mar High’s

boys basketball team, but it was host University’s five starters that

did the most damage in a 72-53 Trojans’ victory Friday night in

Pacific Coast League play.

Jay Northridge led the Sea Kings with 11 points followed by 10

from Adam Freede and six by Pancho Seaborn.

Ryan Lance finished with five points while Tyler Lance, Taylor

McDonald and Joe Kabaklian each tallied four points. Shaun Mohler

scored three points to with two each by Reid Watanabe, Brian Reynolds

and Derrick Manni.

Lightning settle for tie

* SOCCER: Sage Hill School’s girls soccer team outshot host

Capistrano Valley Christian, 21-2, but could only muster a 2-2 tie

Friday in Academy League play.

Megan Curry took a cross from Amy Werblin to give Sage Hill a 1-0

lead in the first half. Later in the half, Kara Percival took a pass

from Ali McLaughlin and sent the ball into the net from outside the

18-yard box, giving Sage a 2-1 lead.
