Velocity claims crown

The Velocity roller hockey team, featuring 12-year-old players from

Newport Beach and Costa Mesa, claimed top honors at the North

American Roller Hockey Championships Winternationals in Las Vegas,

Nev., Jan. 10.

The Velocity, the No. 3 seed, claimed the Squirt 12-and-under

Platinum Division and defeated the top-seeded Mission Raiders, 8-3,

to claim the gold medal.

Earlier in the day, the locals defeated No. 2-seeded AMB Blue,

5-2.

Velocity’s offense was powered by goals from Evan McNerney, Taylor

Aronson, Dakota Eveland, Tyler Culp, J.T. Osborn and Jordan Thomas.

Bret Olinger, Parker Conant, Darren Nowick and Daniel Turk led the

defense in front of goaltenders Ashley Valencia and B.A. Atkinson.

Mustangs top Seahawks

* WATER POLO: Costa Mesa High junior Sarah Bowman scored five

goals to lead the Mustangs to a 16-1 Golden West League girls water

polo romp over visiting Ocean View Friday.

Junior Allyson Harris and teammate Carley Millian added three

goals apiece as the Mustangs scored most of their goals on the

counterattack, triggered by outlet passes from senior goalie Quyen

Nguyen.

Nguyen made eight saves, as Ocean View as blanked for the first,

second and fourth periods.

The win upped Costa Mesa’s record to 9-8, 2-0 in league. The

Mustangs are scheduled to resume Golden West play Wednesday, when

they play host to Orange at 3:15 p.m.
