Sailors rally to victory

After trailing the entire game, Newport Harbor High took the lead

with three minutes remaining Wednesday and pulled away from Laguna

Hills for a 61-52 boys basketball victory in Sea View League play.

Taylor Young led the Sailors (12-7, 3-1) with 24 points and 14

rebounds, but Harbor received contributions from a variety of

sources.

Ted Slater ignited the Tars, who trailed by three at halftime,

with four steals in the third quarter and finished with four points.

Brett Perrine added 13 points and provided an exclamation point with

a game-ending dunk with three seconds remaining.

The key for Newport Harbor came at the free throw line, where it

shot 22 of 27. Laguna Hills was just two of four.

Mesa dominates Lions

* BASKETBALL: Sophomore Brian Molina scored a team-high 13 points,

dished out nine assists and recorded four steals to help lead the

Costa Mesa High boys basketball team to a 61-33 Golden West League

victory over host Westminster Wednesday.

The Mustangs (12-7, 3-2 in league) built a 20-0 lead that went

into the second quarter, and they held a 30-9 advantage at halftime.

Sophomore Scott Knox scored 10 points, while junior Brandon Aleson

contributed career highs in scoring (eight points) and rebounds

(nine). Jeff Waldron added nine points and 11 rebounds.

Sea Kings rout Calvary

* BASKETBALL: Jay Northridge led Corona del Mar High with 29

points as the Sea Kings built a 30-point lead and earned their first

Pacific Coast League boys basketball victory with a 70-50 win over

host Calvary Chapel Wednesday.

Ryan Lance and Adam Freede each added 12 points for Corona del Mar

(10-10, 1-3 in league), which broke a three-game losing streak.

Eagles lose by one

* BASKETBALL: The Orange High boys basketball team dealt Estancia

its third-straight loss, scoring on a layup with six seconds left to

edge the host Eagles, 46-45, in Golden West League action Wednesday.

Junior Carlos Pinto, who scored 15 points, put in a layup on a

designed play after a timeout to give Estancia a 45-44 lead with 15

seconds left. Moments later, Estancia (10-10, 2-4 in league) regained

possession on a dead ball and Pinto was immediately fouled. Eagles

Coach Russell King said Orange quickly scored after Pinto’s miss on a

one-and-one opportunity.

Junior Hugo Escobedo added 13 points for the Eagles.

Tars strike down Hawks

* SOCCER: Newport Harbor High’s boys soccer team scored three

unanswered goals to claim a 3-1 Sea View League victory over host

Laguna Hills Wednesday.

Will Guzman took a through ball from Brian Campos and beat the

goalkeeper to even the score in the 15th minute.

Matt Tracy assisted both goals in the second half as Skyler

Taugher and Joel Walker each found the back of the net for the

Sailors (10-4, 3-1 in league). Guzman sent a cross to Tracy, who

deflected the ball to Walker to cap the Newport scoring.

Taylor Carver made six saves in goal and Chase Kelly added strong

defense, Newport Coach Ryan Hernandez said.

Eagles roll over Orange

* SOCCER: Luis Mendoza and Luis Garcia each scored two goals as

Estancia routed visiting Orange, 4-0, in a Golden West League clash

Wednesday.

Garcia also added an assist as the Eagles (6-5-4, 3-2-2 in league)

played their best game since knocking off Santa Margarita in early

December, Eagles Coach Steve Crenshaw said.

Mesa stays atop league

* WATER POLO: The Costa Mesa High girls water polo team remained

undefeated in Golden West League play with an 8-6 victory over

visiting Orange Wednesday.

Junior Sarah Bowman scored five goals while senior Jessica

Steenhard added three to knock Orange from the undefeated ranks in

league.

Orange (9-3, 3-1 in league) tied the Mustangs (10-8, 3-0) twice before the hosts opened up a four-goal lead in the second half.

Senior Quyen Nguyen made eight saves in goal for Mesa.

Tars wipe out Marina

* SURFING: The Newport Harbor High surf team ended its three-meet

losing skid with a resounding victory over Marina at 56th Street in

Newport Beach Wednesday.

The Sailors won all eight heats and recorded victories in each of

the five team events, amassing 105 out of a possible 120 points.

Joey Head earned his eighth first-place showing of the season by

winning his heat in the boys short board event. Erica Hosseini won

the girls short board competition.

Tanner Prairie won the boys long board competition, while Matt

Kretschmar, Daniel Matthews and Cameron White swept the top three

spots in the body board event.

Mustangs fall to Lions

* SOCCER: The Costa Mesa High boys soccer team got within one

goal, but host Westminster pulled away to earn a 5-2 Golden West

League victory Wednesday.

The Lions led, 3-0, at halftime, before Mesa sophomore Zaid Khalil

scored from 12 yards out off a cross from Alfonso Pineda in the 50th

minute.

Senior Brian Beach then took advantage when the Lions’ goalkeeper

dropped the ball and Beach knocked the rebound into the net, cutting

Westminster’s lead to 3-2 in the 60th minute.

Eric Vargas had six saves in goal for Mesa (0-13, 0-7 in league).

Eagles fall short

* WATER POLO: Junior Courtney Hess scored a game-high six goals,

but the Estancia High girls water polo team’s rally fell short and

the Eagles lost, 9-8, in a Golden West League game at Santa Ana

Wednesday.

Senior Marilyn Reich and sophomore Chelsea Kaplan added one goal

each for Estancia (8-4, 2-2 in league).

Sailors fall on the mat

* WRESTLING: Newport Harbor High remained winless in the Sea View

League, falling Wednesday to Aliso Niguel, 64-14.

Kid Lim earned a technical fall with a 16-1 victory in the 119-pound weight class. Craig Nordstrom was victorious, pinning his

opponent at the 5:20 mark at 135 pounds. At 140 pounds, Kyle Codey

earned a 10-8 victory.

OCC denied by Lasers

* BASKETBALL: The Orange Coast College men’s basketball team could

not make up for its disadvantage in rebounding and lost, 76-70, to

Orange Empire Conference visitor Irvine Valley Wednesday.

The Lasers (8-7, 3-2 in conference) outrebounded OCC, 36-18. Alex

Hunter led the Pirates (4-13, 1-4) with 19 points to share game-high

honors with IVC’s Travon Keahey.

Lions roar in El Cajon

* BASKETBALL: Vanguard University improved to 15-1 with a 98-47

victory over Christian Heritage Tuesday in El Cajon, Calif.

The Lions (7-1 in conference) outscored the Hawks 66-19 in the

second half, making seven of eight three-pointers and 15 of 19 from

the free-throw line.

Kelly Schmidt led Vanguard with 25 points and point guard Lisa

Faulkner had 13 points and 13 assists.
