Seahawks take command in hoops races

Ocean View High continued its dominance in the Golden West League

boys’ basketball race by running past host Santa Ana, 82-59.

The Seahawks, who bolted to a 30-8 first quarter lead and led by

37 entering the fourth quarter, were led by Greg Okwudibonye, who

finished with 19 points.

Bear Wurts scored 17 points, Brad Sweezy had 11 and Matt Sargeant

netted 10.

John Greiner hit both of the Seahawks’ three-point shots and added

eight points.

In previous league play, Ocean View routed visiting Westminster,

78-46. Sargeant’s 19 points and 12 by Okwudibonye led the Seahawks.

In Sunset League boys’ basketball, Marina was a 55-47 winner over

visiting Fountain Valley.

Matt Brennan led the way for the Vikings with a game-best 20

points and James Lambert contributed 18 points.

Edison fell on the road to Esperanza, 67-41. Alex Wright’s 11

points topped the Chargers.

Huntington dropped a 49-40 home game to co-Sunset leader Los

Alamitos.

In earlier Sunset League basketball, Edison won at Marina, 73-63,

and Huntington Beach lost to host Esperanza, 66-40.

Four Chargers scored in double figures during Edison’s 10-point

triumph at Marina, led by Kevin Reed’s 16 points.

Joe Ziemann scored 12 points and Pat Feducia and T.J. Lipold each

scored 10 points. Alex Wright added nine points.

The Chargers, who trailed by three after the first quarter but led

by five at the half, hit 10 three-point baskets in the game.

Reed connected on three shots from three-point range and Feducia

and Jeff Golden each had two.

In Huntington’s loss at Esperanza, Brandon McLaughlin scored 23 of

the Oilers’ 40 points.

In girls’ basketball, first-place Ocean View was impressive in a

70-31 home court Golden West League victory over Orange.

Four Seahawks reached double figures in scoring, with Vanessa

Alderfer’s 18 points leading the way.

Josnique Thomas contributed 14 points and Erica Williams and Leila

Abufarie each scored 11.

Alderfer and Abufarie each hit three, three-point shots to account

for all six Ocean View baskets from the arch.

Ocean View also rolled past league foe Westminster, 56-45, on the

Lions’ home floor.

Williams hit a trio of three-point baskets and finished with a

game-high 25 points and D.J. Butler scored 10.

In Sunset League girls’ basketball, visiting Marina pushed Edison

to overtime, where the host Chargers pulled out a 47-44 win.

Rebecca Kepilino posted a game-best 23 points and teammate Valerie

Katayama scored 14 for Edison.

Sophomore Allison Budzinski’s 14 points led Marina and sophomore

Erin Barney scored nine.

Edison took over first place in the league race by defeating

visiting Esperanza, 51-40. Katayama scored 16 points, 12 of which

were scored in the second half, Kepilino had 14 points and Jessica

Harris scored 13 points for the Chargers.

The victory avenged a 45-40 defeat Edison suffered to Esperanza in

tournament play on Dec. 30.

Marina came back from the overtime loss to Edison to rout visiting

Fountain Valley, 62-40. Budzinski scored 12 points, Katherine Hennes

scored 10 points and Rachael Maulit and Lindsey Schulze each had nine

points for the Vikings.

Huntington fell to Los Alamitos, 45-29, in Sunset play.

In boys’ soccer, Edison established itself as the Sunset League

front-runner by scoring a key, 1-0 victory at Esperanza.

The teams had fought to a scoreless tie at the half and Ian Cone’s

48th minute goal, which was set up by a Garrett Smith pass, decided

the outcome.

The Charger defense kept the Aztecs off the scoreboard, and keeper

John Timoti finished with four saves.

Huntington was a 2-1 winner over visiting Los Alamitos.

Also, Edison edged host Marina in overtime, 2-1. The Chargers, who

trailed at the half, 1-0, got a late goal by Brandon Plummer to force

overtime, where A.J. Benton scored the game-winning goal.

Huntington fell to Esperanza in overtime, 3-2.

In girls’ soccer, Edison edged visiting Marina, 3-2.

Kaitlin Thulin scored the game-winning goal for the Chargers, who

also got goals from Amanda Draeger and Erin DuPont.

Edison was also impressive in a 2-0 shutout of Esperanza in a

match between two teams battling for sole possession of first place

in the Sunset League.

Goals by Christina Clifford and Brianne Wahrenbrock, combined with

a tenacious defense and three saves by keeper Kelsey Bowman, lifted

the host Chargers.

Erin Bay’s late goal lifted Los Alamitos past Huntington, 3-2.
