CdM upsets Northwood

Kate Heeschen made a layup with 15 seconds remaining to give the

Corona del Mar High girls basketball team a 35-33 victory over

visiting Northwood in Pacific Coast League play Thursday.

The Timberwolves (12-8, 3-2 in league) entered the game in second

place, but the Sea Kings (7-11, 2-3) limited them to 13 points in the second half, including zero points in the first five-plus minutes of

the third quarter.

Heeschen finished with 10 points, four rebounds, two assists and

seven steals. Sophomore Katie Schulte added nine points, seven

rebounds, two steals and two assists and senior Lauren Snell came off

the bench to score nine points, grab six rebounds and come up with

three steals.

Costa Mesa shuts out Lions

* SOCCER: Nilani Duarte and Brittney Banning each scored goals and

the host Costa Mesa High girls soccer team made the lead stand up in

a 2-0 Golden West League victory over Westminster Thursday.

Banning began the scoring in the 27th minute when she capitalized

on a centering pass from Kristen Paulsen.

Duarte found the back of the net from 25 yards out in the 47th

minute after receiving a pass from Caitlin Duffy.

Westminster (6-5-2, 2-4-1 in league) packed nine players inside

the 18-yard box to deny Mesa (9-5, 6-0) scoring chances, Mustangs’

Coach Dan Johnston said. LKions’ goalkeeper Adriana Nejera made six

saves.

Junior forward Jenny Sparks, a second-team All-CIF Southern

Section Division III honoree a year ago who has been sidelined since

Dec. 11 with a knee injury, has begun running again, but is not

cleared to play, Johnston said.

Mesa (9-5, 6-0 in league) begins the first of three road league

games next week when they face Santa Ana at 3:15 p.m. Monday.

Estancia wins fifth straight

* BASKETBALL: Nancy Castro scored 20 points while Imelda Pena

tallied 17 to pace the visiting Estancia High girls basketball team

to a 59-36 Golden West League victory over Orange Thursday.

The Eagles (8-11, 5-1 in league) led the whole game en route to

winning their fifth in a row. Estancia Coach Tamette Rappa switched

to a trapping, zone defense in the fourth quarter and the Eagles

pulled further away from the Panthers (0-6 in league).

Anabel Becerra scored 14 points while Olivia Maldonado had four

points and Jazmin Flores added two. The Eagles tallied 19 steals,

including six by Castro and five by Pena. Castro grabbed 10 rebounds

while Neal tallied six.

Castro had two blocks, one to start the fourth quarter that

ignited the Eagles, Rappa said. Maldonado also blocked two shots.

Senior guard Trisha Wase sat out due to illness, Rappa said.

The Eagles have a bye Monday before hosting Ocean View at 7 p.m.

Wednesday. The Seahawks dealt the Eagles their lone league loss.

Warriors get gift in victory

* SOCCER: Visiting Woodbridge High got a gift goal in the 74th

minute from host Newport Harbor and prevailed, 2-1, in a Sea View League girls soccer game Thursday. A Woodbridge cross into a sparse

Newport defense was accidentally deflected into the net for the

game-winner.

Junior Kiley Hall, playing in her second game back after battling

an ankle injury, headed the ball into the net off a throw-in by

Krystal Wright to give the Sailors a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute.

Woodbridge answered with a goal off a penalty kick three minutes

later and the game turned into a defensive battle.

Newport goalkeeper Kara DeMille made seven saves on 12 Woodbridge

shots. The Sailors fired seven shots. (2-13-2, 1-3-1 in league).

Newport returns to action at Foothill at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday.

Vanguard rolls to another win

* BASKETBALL: Vanguard University won for the 12th straight time

Thursday with an 81-59 women’s basketball victory over Golden State

Athletic Conference foe Cal Baptist.

Kelly Schmidt, the conference’s leading scorer, paced the Lions

(16-1, 8-1 in conference) with 28 points, shooting 10 of 13 from the

field and eight of nine from the free-throw line. Lisa Faulkner added

17 points, five rebounds and five assists.

Big West lauds UCI’s Parada

* BASKETBALL: Adam Parada, a 7-foot senior center on the UC Irvine

men’s basketball team, has earned Big West Conference Co-Player of

the Week honors for his part in two Anteater wins last week.

Parada had 18 points, hitting 7 of 9 field-goal attempts and all

four foul shots, in a home victory over Cal State Fullerton Saturday.

He had 14 points and seven rebounds in the Jan. 15 home win over UC Riverside. Parada shared the honor with Utah State’s Nate Harris.

Schmidt Lion of Week

* BASKETBALL: Kelly Schmidt, a freshman forward on the Vanguard

University women’s basketball team, has been named Lion of the Week

by the school’s athletic department.

Schmidt, a 6-foot standout from Glendale, Ariz., averaged 19

points and 12 rebounds in victories over Point Loma Nazarene (Jan.

20) and Azusa Pacific (Jan. 24).

Schmidt’s consistent excellence has helped the Lions post a 14-1

record, the best start in the history of the program, and earn the

No. 4 NAIA ranking. She made 18 of 20 free throws in the two Golden

State Athletic Conference victories. Her 13 rebounds at APU tied her

career single-game high and were part of her sixth double-double this

season.

She is averaging 20.7 points and 8.7 rebounds for Coach Russ

Davis. She is shooting 62% from the field and 83% from the line.

Beauchamp wins contest

* BASKETBALL: Chance Beauchamp of Newport Beach won the Elks Lodge

National “Hoop Shoot” Orange Coast District free-throw shooting

contest in the 8-9 age group on Jan. 10 at Century High in Santa Ana.

Beauchamp, who made 21 of 25 free throws, advanced to the

California state finals next month at Cal State Northridge. He had

previously won a local contest at the Costa Mesa Boys & Girls Club in

December.

The winner of the state contest advances to the national finals in

Massachusetts later this year.
