Laguna Beach High’s boys’ soccer teams earned a lopsided victory in

Pacific Coast League play as it sprinted past host Calvary Chapel,

8-0.

Playing on a larger field than usual, the Breakers scored early to

establish control.

Pablo Hernandez played a through ball to Juan Luna, and Luna ran

onto it and hit a low shot into the corner of the net.

At the 25-minute mark, a strong, driven cross from Joey LeBon

found Luna, who then stuck a foot in before the Calvary Chapel

defender and placed the ball into the goal.

Moments later, Taylor King took a corner drive from Brendan

Hexberg and delivered a powerful header into the net. That was

followed by a Derek LeBon goal.

Derek LeBon entered the match just before halftime and went on an

amazing run. He dribbled around three Calvary defenders before

hitting a shot across the Eagles keeper into the far corner of the

net.

That score gave Laguna a 4-0 lead at the break.

In the second half, Luna completed his hat trick with his third

goal, King scored on a direct kick from 25 yards out, Derek LeBon

scored a second time and Pablo Hernandez, off a cross from Zack

Tischio, knocked in a goal to complete the scoring.

Laguna visited Tesoro Wednesday. Prior to the Calvary Chapel game,

Laguna dropped a tough, 1-0 league match to Northwood.

The Timberwolves scored their lone goal midway through the first

half on a corner kick.

“I wasn’t happy how we defended the corner, as we left players

open at the far post, which is how they scored,” Thomas said. “After

the goal, however, we really fought hard in all areas of the field

and for the last 10 minutes, bombarded Northwood with a lot of

pressure.”

But Northwood withstood Laguna’s surge for the 1-0 victory.

Thomas noted the play of his goalkeeper, Diego Valdivia.

“He stepped up big time, making some great saves,” he said. “I

feel our performance was a turning point in the season,” Thomas said.

In girls’ soccer Tuesday, Laguna was blanked by Tesoro, 3-0.

The Breakers trailed, 2-0, at the half.

Laguna had picked up its first league victory and second win of

the season with a 1-0 win at Calvary Chapel.

Ana Velasquez’s first half goal proved the difference in the

match.

“I thought all of our 11 girls played well,” Coach Mike Thomas

said. “They fought hard and played a very physical game.”

In girls’ water polo, Laguna, ranked third in CIF Southern Section

Division II, stepped out of PCL play to take on Tustin.

The Breakers led from the start in the nonleague match and went on

to post a 6-5 road victory.

Addison Doud and Jessica McKee each netted two goals and Kat

Gordon and Breanna Duplisea each scored once.

Laguna led by as many as three goals, then hung on for the win.

“We were well ahead and should have won this easily,” Coach Rick

McKee said. “It’s just one of those hiccup games every team has.”

Laguna opened PCL play with a 9-4 loss to top-ranked and host

Corona del Mar, in a match much closer than the final score would

indicate.

Doud scored all four goals for the Breakers, who battled league

foe Northwood Wednesday
