Rubino sparks CdM

The Corona del Mar High boys soccer team dominated in the first half

and went on to deal visiting Northwood its first Pacific Coast League

loss of the season with a 1-0 Sea King victory Friday.

Senior Dominic Rubino scored on an assist from senior Julien

Cerutti in the 27th minute.

“It was a great goal,” CdM Coach Pat Callaghan said.

The Sea Kings (8-2-6, 3-0-2 in league) continually attacked

Northwood (10-5-3, 4-1) and broke through in the 27th minute when

Cerutti sent a cross in the 18-yard box, finding Rubino who fired it

in toward the near post.

CdM outshot Northwood, 9-0, in the first half and 14-2 in the game that featured the teams that shared the PCL title last year.

The Timberwolves remain in first place in the PCL, one point ahead

of the Sea Kings.

Callaghan said he made some position adjustments and his players

responded with one of their best efforts of the season. n addition to

Rubino and Cerutti, Callaghan also credited contributions from senior

Jeritt Thayer.

Sage chalks up shutout

* SOCCER: Sage Hill School’s boys soccer team extended its shutout

streak in the Academy League to four games with a 6-0 victory over

visiting Whitney Friday.

The Lightning (6-4, 4-0 in league) have outscored their opponents,

18-0, during the four-game winning streak.

Senior midfielder Julian Smith-Newman tallied his second

consecutive hat trick with a three-goal effort Friday. He scored the

only goal in the first half in the 20th minute off one of Zack

Milder’s three assists.

Smith-Newman, Salinger and Braden Ross each added one assist.

Cesar Arriaga made three saves in goal.

Sage Hill host Oxford Academy at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday.

Bowman leads Mesa

* WATER POLO: Junior Sarah Bowman scored four goals and senior

Jessica Steenhard added two for Costa Mesa High as the Mustangs

defeated Tesoro, 6-1, in nonleague girls water polo action Friday at

Tesoro.

The Mustangs (11-8), who scored three goals in the second quarter

for a 3-0 halftime lead, were also led by goalie Quyen Nguyen (seven

saves). They host Estancia in Golden West League action at 3:15 p.m.

Wednesday.

CdM holds off ‘Wolves

* BASKETBALL: Corona del Mar High’s boys basketball team jumped to

a 29-11 lead and held off a late surge by visiting Northwood to earn

a 60-58 Pacific Coast League victory Friday night.

Senior guard Jay Northridge, who finished with a team-high 24

points, hit the front end of a one-and-one situation with 10 seconds

left to give the Sea Kings a 60-58 lead. CdM fouled sophomore Tino

Zaragoza, who scored a game-high 28 points, as he drove through the

lane on the final possession, setting up an inbounds play under the

basket.

With three seconds left, Zaragoza, who stands 6-foot-5, took the

lob, but his shot hit the front of the rim, CdM Coach Ryan Curry

said.

“We’ll take it,” Curry said.

Pancho Seaborn scored 17 points while Adam Freede added 12 for the

Sea Kings (11-10, 2-3 in league).

Northridge and Joe Kabaklian each it key three-pointers in the

fourth quarter. CdM tallied eight threes, four by Northridge.

Kabaklian drained his first of the season and gave CdM a

four-point lead with three minutes, 20 seconds remaining.

Northwood fell to 11-10, 2-3.

The Sea Kings host Laguna Beach to begin the second round of

league play at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Sea Kings sink Spartans

* WATER POLO: Corona del Mar High’s girls water polo team scored

four first-period goals and was well on its way to a 5-3 nonleague

win over visiting Villa Park Friday.

Junior Katlin Kubas led CdM (9-7) with three goals while Jordan

Anae and Camille Hewko each scored one.

Katya Eadington, Ashley Chandler and Chelsea Lyman each made three

steals while Hewko added two assists.

Brittany Fullen made six saves in goal for CdM.

The Sea Kings outshot Villa Park, 26-17.

CdM’s frosh-soph team improved to 9-1 with a 6-1 victory over

Villa Park.

Christina Evans scored three goals while Leilani Livingston added

two for the Sea Kings.

Sage Hill nets win

* SOCCER: Host Sage Hill School’s girls soccer team shut out

Whitney, 3-0, to record its first Academy League victory this season

Friday.

Junior Amy Werblin began the scoring with an unassisted goal in

the first half. Outside halfback Caroline Sauter took a cross from

freshman Ali McLaughlin and scored from inside the six-yard box to up

the lead to 2-0 in the 15th minute. Kelsey Rose capped the scoring

with a 30-yard blast that found the upper-right corner of the goal.

Laura Gordon made six saves for Sage Hill (5-4-2, 1-2-1 in league) while Caroline Hu had 10 saves for Whitney (1-6-2, 1-2-1).

Sage Hill faces host Oxford Academy at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday.

Coast cruises past Dons

* BASKETBALL: Three players scored in double figures and the host

Orange Coast College women’s basketball team breezed to a 74-35

Orange Empire Conference victory over Santa Ana Friday.

Alisa Carrillo scored a game-high 18 points while Lauren Stepanski

and Celeste Haueter each tallied 11 for Coast (11-9, 4-2 in the OEC).

Coast went 19 of 22 from the free-throw line (86.3%) while Santa

Ana (0-15, 0-6) went to the line just 10 times and made five.

Biava Arganda grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds and added six points

to go with seven points by Ruby Viloria. Shaadi Ariazand scored five

points while Jessica Chades and Rhondi Naff each scored four points.

Stacee Sanchez (Costa Mesa High) finished with five points while

Amy Shaw added three.

Newport, Edison tie

* SURFING: The Newport Harbor High surf team ended its season,

tying Edison, 84-84, as the Sailors won the final heat of the day to

gain the result Friday at 56th Street in Newport Beach.

Lisa Turk won the girls long board event for the Sailors (10-4-1),

while Erica Hossieni won the girls short board competition.

Matt Kretschmar won the body board competition, but Newport, as a

team, lost in that event.

Tommy Holbrook and Brett Catron grabbed first-place finishes in

their respective heats in the boys short board competition.

Newport won the girls long board event, as Jill Austin and Devon

Falasco contributed with second- and fourth-place finishes,

respectively. Amie Benjamin and Lisa Evans, third and fourth,

respectively, helped lead Newport to the win in the girls short board

competition.

The Sailors established a new school record this year, as 24 of

their 39 surfers registered a first-place finish this season.

UCI falls to Pepperdine

* TENNIS: Brian Morton and Ryusuke Kashiwabara picked up singles

victories, but the UC Irvine men’s tennis team lost to host

Pepperdine, 5-2, Friday.

Morton (Corona del Mar High) defeated Alexis Rafidison, 7-6, 5-7,

.6-3, while Kashiwabara topped Scott Doerner, 6-2, 6-2.

The 27th-ranked Waves (2-0) swept the doubles matches to earn the

doubles point.

Pepperdine’s seventh-ranked doubles team of Calle Hansen and Pedro

Rico defeated Jon Endrikat and Morton, 9-8 (6). Morton and Endrikat

defeated the Pepperdine duo in the fall season in the All-American

Championships in Tennessee.

The Anteaters (0-2) will return to the courts at noon on Sunday

when they host the 26th-ranked Clemson Tigers.

Sage comes up short

* BASKETBALL: Sage Hill School’s girls basketball team held a

five-point lead after three quarters, but lost, 47-42, to host

Whitney, which remained undefeated in the Academy League Friday

night.

Junior Katie Puishys led the Lightning with 17 points and 22 rebounds, while sophomore Haywood Wright had 13 points and eight

rebounds.

Sage Hill (7-7, 2-2 in league) led, 35-30, going in to the fourth

quarter, but Lightning Coach Shanna Renkin said her players became

tired and Whitney (11-5, 4-0) was able to pull away.

* BASKETBALL: Orange Coast College’s men’s basketball team

couldn’t hold a 33-24 halftime lead and lost to visiting Santa Ana,

66-53, in an Orange Empire Conference game Friday night. The Pirates

(4-14, 1-5 in the OEC) shot just 26% in the second half (7 of 27)

after going 11 for 20 through the first 20 minutes (55%).

Jason Garey led the Pirates with 16 points, including hitting 4 of

9 three-pointers, while Joseph Nwabuzor tallied 13 points.

The Dons (8-10, 2-4) outrebounded Coast, 46-26, and made 26 free

throws to OCC’s 11.

Nedim Pajevic, a Newport Harbor High product, scored four points.
