ON THE AGENDA

Here are some items to be considered by the Newport Beach City

Council tonight:

FIREFIGHTERS’ GRANT

The City Council is set to accept a $42,140 grant from the Federal

Emergency Management Agency that would pay for the fire department’s

Fire Safety Kit. The kit includes handy tools such as thermal

imagers, a video observation unit and flashlights. The federal agency

approved a grant application from the fire department in December.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The council is expected to accept the grant money and provide 30%

matching funds of $18,060.

CITY ATTORNEY RECRUITMENT

The city attorney recruitment subcommittee established in August

after City Atty. Bob Burnham announced his retirement has come up

with recommendations that the committee should be involved in the

initial screening process, and taking it one step further, interview

applicants selected from that pool. The committee also suggests that

finalists be interviewed by the full council.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The council may accept all or some of the committee’s

recommendations and might decide to extend the committee’s term.

CORONA DEL MAR BEACH PROJECT

The city manager’s office is recommending that the city apply for

a $784,000 grant under Proposition 40 -- known as the California

Clean Water, Clean Air, Safe Neighborhood Parks and Coastal

Protection Act of 2002 -- and under the Urban Park Act of 2001

Program to fund the beach improvement project. The $2.4-million

project involves expansion or reconstruction of visitor facilities

while maintaining the aesthetic appeal of the beach. The city has

already set aside about $1.6 million for the project.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The council is expected to direct the city manager’s office to go

ahead with the grant application.
